| I have an ultra compact with night Novak sights. This pistol shoots about 8" low at only 15 yds. Have any of you had this problem? I have a Kimber Gold Match that is dead balls accurate. This ultra compact has a flat strap with a beavertail grip saftey. |
Comparing those two is like comparing a Mini Cooper with a Ford F-350, IMO. First thing, try different brands of ammo. Many mfgrs will have varying fps speeds & will have a different point of impact. If 3-4 different brands makes no difference, then send it back to Springfield along with a sample target of what you've personally shot. Lifetime warranty IS a wonderful thing............... I would also have more than one shooter try the gun to ensure you're not pulling down on the trigger of the smaller 1911. I've been guilty of this myself from time to time. Good luck! |

No 6:00 hold, you need to cover up the target with the sigthts. Also, are the shots dead low or at a low left placement? The reason I bring this up is on the small pistols, it's really easy to fight the recoil/ change finger position, and cause low left shots. As stated, try different ammo, less fighting of the pistol with a target cover up hold and see if the problem goes away. Note: the rear sight should be a.375 and the front a .165. You might want to check to make sure that they did not install a .325 rear sight and it causing the problems. |
| I bought an UC .45 a few months ago. First time shooting it,25yds, it was hitting about 5" low with a 6 0'clock hold. Adjusted my grip a little ( tightened up on right hand more than usual) and covered point of aim like Dano523 said. Point of impact now exactly where front sight dot covers. Have been using 230gn Black Hills, some IPSC handloads in 230gn, and Aguilla 230gn. all have same POI. This was my first officer-size gov't model and just took a little practice to get used to. |

I have not had a chance to shoot different ammo yet, but I was covering point of aim all along. I will be amazed if ammo is the problem. Come to think of it, I fired Federal hyra-shocks as well as ball ammo with the same effect. It could be my hold, I am not saying I am THE man with a handgun, but I have 3 other pistols in both 9mm and .45 and do not have this problem with those. They all have their distinct sight allignment, but nothing like this. I will say, however, that this is the only short barelled one. Maybe Dano has a point. Btw, the shots are dead low. SA told me to send it back to them, but I want to do everything I can to be sure it isn't me first. I would think that odds are better that I am at fault than SA, but I will say that I was very disappointed in their craftsmanship. I think it is likley all cosmetic, but it is an indication of overall craftsmanship to me. Given their history, I expected better (this is my first SA). They stamped the logo and serial number on the slide. I would have expected them to be engraved. The logo is stamped so unevenly that a portion of it didn't even imprint. The digits in the serial number are stamped at varying depths. The guide rod has relatively rough tool marks on it. The side of the frame is stamped Springfield, Geneseo IL USA. The bottom of the frame is roghly engraved Imbel made in Brazil. The "Ultra Compact Cal .45" stamped on the slide is slightly misalligned. I will admit that I am a perfectionist, but does this sound like standard Springfield quality to you guys? Maybe it is, like I said this is my first. If so, I am surprised. |
Yes, marks/stampings sound normal for a production unit, but check the height of your rear sight blade. The rear blade should be .375 high, but they may have installed a .325 unit by mistake. Also, the front should be .165 so check that as well. Also, the shorty barrels are tad bit weird on ammo selection. If the ammo is loaded with slower burning powder, it does not get a full burn before the bullet runs out of barrel, and the bullet will impact lower than say standard loaded ammo at the same bullet weight (faster burning powder being the difference). I found this out trying to use HS-6 and Unique through a micro to go +P, which resulted with huge muzzle flashes/sparks, and a lot of un-burnt powder getting dumped back into the action at unlock. If you reload, give this a load a try. Speer gold dot 230 HP (flying ashtray) 5.2 of N-320 (fast burning powder that works great/clean in the short barrels) CCI Large pistol primer Note: this listed load is at the max per the manual, and not into the +P range. Also, if you don't want to pony up for the N-320 powder, Clays or even Bullseye burn at about the same rate, and you could try to use one of those (you will need to check the manuals for the correct amount of powder to use). Again, with the short barrel, you want a gun powder that will give you a full burn before the bullet exits the barrel, and the powders listed are about as slow as you can go and acheive it. |
Hmmm... that makes sense. I hadn't lookd at the ammo issue from that point. |
