A buddy of mine just picked one of these up. Talk about a badass looking pistol.

My question is: the one my buddy has has got the under-barrel light/tac rail that goes right to the end of the barrel/slide. Most of the pics I see (including here and in SA's catalog/web site) show the rail only going to where the frame normally ends.

Is his a different or earlier model? It looks wicked but I haven't even been able to find a pic of one like it.

TIA!

If you think it looks bad, wait till you see how it shoots.  I did a sideby comparison between a mildly customized mil-spec and a friend's operator and it cut my groups in half.  I was amazed.

No idea about the rail though...

There is an artical in the January issue of Guns & Ammo about Springfields new "shortened" rail Operator.  Your friend has an earlier model, which is actually getting rare to find!  The rail was shortend to reduce weight and realisticly, gun lights/lasers are smaller and lighter!  There is no need for all that rail on it.  It's still freaking bad ass!
I envy your friends new favorite pistol!

most people who have the full dust cover like them, the extra weight up front should make them shoot better.  i think springfield got lazy, wierd since they already have the setup.

I've got a TRP Operator with the full length rail. The shortened rail on this model is new for this year. Personally, there are a number of typical rail guns and the full length had a unique, aggressive look that I dug. Also have a Kimber Warrior, and shooting the two side by side, I can honestly say that the extra rail does tame the recoil a bit. It's a tack driver.

I picked this up a few months ago, used for $1000 bucks and added the Streamlight TLR-2, Alumagrips and a Dawson Precision tooless guide rod and have no regrets whatsoever.

It is an excellent handgun IMO.
