A friend just got a full size springfield .45, and he wants to take it apart to clean it. It has a full length gide rod with a flat head indention on the end. How hard does it need to be turned to loosen the guide rod. (I am a SIG/GLOCK owner and I'm not too familiar with 1911's) We've tried pretty hard but don't want to wreck anything. We have downloaded the manual form springfield. Its not much help. Suggestions?

I've just recently been thru this so here goes - I take it he has a SA 1911 with a 2 pc guide rod? if it has a slotted end on the GR or a hex socket you have a 2 pc. If  not
its a 1 pc. I had the same reservation about forcing it ( mine has the 2 pc version) but you need to put as much pressure as needed (to the left! lefty loosy - righty tighty) to loosen it. after clearing the pistol of ammo and mag this is the first step. then with a
bushing wrench depress the plug and rotate the bushing and be VERY careful to catch the plug as it will be under spring pressure and fly out if you are not careful. Better yet
check out m1911.org for some very helpful instructions for dis and re assembly
I did not find the SA manual very helpful myself. When I first began to deal w/1911s I was able to take it down pretty easily but Reassembly was a bitch (for me). Asking here and referencing the m1911.org site went a long way to get it done - good luck.

Disassembly & reassembly gets much easier as time goes by with practice. As long as the recoil spring plug is pushed down with the bushing wrench, there should be no problem turning the bushing. Some folks use the plastic wrench in order to not harm anything as the plastic may not allow too much torque to harm something. Might try this tool for a while?

Jerry Kuhenhausen (sp?) has way cool posters on cut-aways for the 1911. These are immensely helpful when detail stripping the 1911. He also has a manual or two as well.

Good luck!!!!

if its a std 1911 w/ the full rod, try this: depress the guide rod bushing (wrench might be required, but usually not), turn the bbl bushing to the right (?) half way, push the slide back till the notch on the slide lines up w/ the slide stop notch's rear, go from there

This might help
