I've been wanting to pick up a new XD.  I will eventually get the 45 ACP, but in the meantime, I've been eye-balling the .40, with the thought that I could pick up the barrel conversions and end up with 3 calibers out of one frame with the other two barrels and mags.

Anyone have any experience with the Barsto or EFK Fire Dragon conversions, if so...how well do the conversions work?

In an ideal world, I would just buy one of each...but for whatever reason I wasn't born as Billy Gates maternal twin, nor can I find his check book.

I like the idea of having the options of those 3 calibers..not to mention the cost savings in shooting 9mm...and still having the knock-down power of the 357Sig or 40cal. for when you want it.

Or bag it and get the .45 in 4"?

Seems to sum it up right there, IMO.

 Big +1

I can shoot the hell out of the 9 and 45 but the 40 I can’t shoot well at all.
I just shot my new XD-45 Service 4" for the first time yesterday. I was just as good if not better with it as my Sig P226 that I have been shooting for years.
I am not the sharpshooter that you all are but I was impressed with my ability to shoot the XD-45.
Just for fun we took aim on a hundred yard target at the range we set up for our rifles resting on the bench. 6 shot’s each of all three calibers.
Our targets were standard 100 yard for a 22 rifle we only counted what hit the target paper. Not if they were in the rings. I think they are 14 inches square.
My score
2 out of 6 with my Sig P226-9MM.
4 out of 6 with my XD-45 4” service
0 out of 6 with my friends Glock 23-40.

My friend well he is a beginner and did not hit the target with anything.

I have shot my friends Glock 23 40Cal several times and just can’t shoot it with any consistent accuracy even at close range.
So I say get the best of the best go 45.
Great stopping power.
Ammo is not to outrageously priced.

I am not knocking the Glock weapons mind you. I am just referring to the 40 caliber round and it’s characteristics verses the others.

I have no doubt about how good they are.  I was more curious about the novelty of being able to buy the barrel conversions for the .40 cal, and have the best of 3 worlds in 9mm, .357 Sig, and .40 cal out of the same frame just by swapping barrels and mags.

But the more I read up on the .45 ACP XD, I may just go that route if I can find one locally at a non-inflated price.  They sold out at the last gun show.
