I'm looking at a sub-compact.  Can't fire one yet.  Is it single fire only?

Sorry, my first post. Tongue tied I guess. I'm refering to single action. While at my local gun shop I attempted to dry fire the XD subcompact. Unlike the P99 Walther which is double action there was no similar response from the XD. Thanks for your patience. Until firing in our state's ccw course I had not fired a weapon in 25 yrs. It sure was fun at the range. It opened up pandora's box though.  The range was for local le (the instructor is le). We actually don't have an active public range in a 60 mi radius. Trying out various models is not possible.

The XD is a single action. It must have the slide pulled back to set the trigger. With the safety features that are incorporated, the gun is very safe to carry loaded. It is a very nice gun for the money and the 9mm that I had was extremely accurate.

Welcome to the board.

I like the XD trigger a lot. Long enough pull to make it 'carry safe' without a manual safety, but almost a 2 stage in that it's easy to take the slack up before actually firing. I was a big 1911 guy and also owned a Glock before getting my XD. I find that, from a pragmatic standpoint, it's my preferred choice as a carry gun.  Point and pull simplicity, safe to carry, easy to manipulate. I prefer the ergonomics to Glocks. I really do find it an easy weapon to get hits with.

It's a shame that you can't try one out before you have to decide.

Thanks for your replies. You've been a help in forming my purchase decision. I agree with the comment on good feel in the hand for xd. I also like the p99. I'm still undecided on caliber. I'm for either  model in .40 cal or the xd sub-compact in .45gap. Will keep up with the board on calibers like the negative comments on the .45 gap (longevity,etc)

If you buy an XD in .40 cal, you can buy a 9 mm barrel and shoot the cheaper 9mm for plinking. Food for thought.

A great source of info;

Good thought on interchanging barrells. Solves issues I have on caliber choices. Yrs ago I had a Browning hi-power. The 9mm was an easy shoot. Now looking for one shot capability. Defense gun...home and carry. Postings seem mixed on .40 cal though. Gives me some 2nd thoughts. Hope the .40 is strong enough. I know the 9mm is weak. This issue crosses both of my purchase choices (top two at this time).I like the P99 and the XD sub-compact. Both feel good in hand.

response from springfield armory on .40 cal xd - re 9mm barrells interchange with .40 cal:

Only 40 and 357 can be interchanged for barrels.

Thanks

Consider going to a range that will rent you an XD prior to buying.

You can't use the factory barrel, but there are aftermarket 9mm barrels that work.  BarSto makes one.

Thanks for the input. The factory will only tell you what they provide
