Hey everyone,

I have a question in regards to telling if the Custom Shop did work on a gun I just got in a trade.  I had a Sig M400 OD Green NIB rifle that I traded today for a Springfield Range Officer + $100.  The Range Officer appears lightly used, however the owner informed me he sent the gun into the custom shop for work.  He did not have any paperwork to prove so, but from handling the gun it appears to me that it was indeed sent in for work.

The owner stated the gun had the trigger lightened and tuned, the slide/frame fit tightened up, and the feed ramp polished.  The trigger does seem light and smooth (though there is some pre-travel), the slide/frame fit seems tight, and the feed ramp is polished.  He did however state the custom shop engraved into the underside of the slide a number in regards to the work.  I did find this number but am unsure if this is true.

So does anyone know if they do indeed do such, or any other way to check and see if the gun has been worked on?  I plan on calling the custom shop tomorrow but was just curious as to what the hive had to say first.

The reason I ask is after completing the trade I decided to give the 1911 to my father for an early Christmas present...however after giving it to him he said he can't rack the slide with the hammer down... So seeing as how I still need to get him a gift and don't need another 1911, it will be time to sell it again, just trying to get info on it to help with my resell or at least make sure I am telling the next buyer the truth if I did get jipped.

You can call SA to verify BUT- Springfield engraves all slides there, RO's have nice frame/slide fit from start and usually good triggers.  You got a nice gun but sounds like you maybe should have researched first.

Just wondering, is it hard to cock the hammer back with your thumb?  If it is it could be as simple as an overpowered main spring, but I'd call SA and ask if it's their work.
