After a lifetime of 1911s and CZs looks like I'm gonna break down and get a poly pistol.
Years ago I spent some time with a Glock, didn't like it, was too lite and the trigger was bad. Last weekend I shot a brand new old style, plain XD compact in .40 and I was pleasingly surprised at how well I shot with it. The mags were hard as hell to load. We never did load a full hi-cap mag.
So, looks like Im gonna git one.
I want to make a good choice on which XD to get. The purpose is to shoot matches. Im not taking on any new calibers so I want one in 9mm. 9mm is also much cheaper to load than other cals. (I have noticed there is a ton of .40 S&W brass left at ranges when there isn't any 9mm or 45 auto.)
I don't know anything about the XD, XDM.
Maybe someone can school me/us on the many flavors of the XD/XDm? Does the tactical have a decocker as opposed to a manual safety?
I am perdy sure I want the optic fiber front sight and the longest barrel available.

Thanks Much, Thanks For Your Time

XDm9 is what you want. 19+1 capacity and the factory barrel gets me 3 inch groups at 7 yard shooting fast.

If you want to shoot matches make sure to check the rules of the particular match you want to shoot.  I took an XDm 9mm to an IDPA match and was put in a different classification since the XDm is a match pistol.  I do like my XDm 9mm but for IDPA I use a G19.

Another reason to look at the rules is you may be able to down load a .45acp and still meet power factor.  One of my buddies shoots an XD 45 with lead rounds that just barely cycle the action and still makes power factor.  I shot my G19 9mm and his low power .45acp load side by side and his had a lower recoil and quicker follow up shots.  I don't make too much fun of him since he only has the one hand and he gets screwed on reloads.

BTW if you practice loading the XD.40 mags you will soon get finger tips of steel and will be able to load any mag.
