A bit of background before I launch this out; this Springfield XDM is a carry gun which has been in use for about a year now and was bought brand new. Since it's actually being carried, the magazines are not unloaded on a regular basis; not that they should have to be. The firearm is also kept clean to Monk-like standards and unmodified. At the range this week this began to happen regularly: http://www.use.com/images/s_3/1753e3937a4ff6c55b33.jpg http://www.use.com/images/s_2/1753e3937a4ff6c55b33_2.jpg?is=true&ps=true&rand=793954466468 This happened on the last round of two out of the three magazines that came with the weapon. When you tear the mags down and compare the springs of the malfunctioning magazines to springs from unused magazines, there is a 3" difference in height due to compression of the older mags. After the magazine springs from the bad mags were stretched back, the malfunction ceased (for now.) http://www.use.com/images/s_2/1753e3937a4ff6c55b33_3.jpg?is=true&ps=true&rand=577324772253 http://www.use.com/images/s_2/1753e3937a4ff6c55b33_4.jpg?is=true&ps=true&rand=552258048671 So FYI if you have an XDM that you count on. And as an aside, I've had a Glock 17 with magazines that are only unloaded when shot dry for five years now with zero malfunctions from keeping them loaded. |
| FYI, stretching the mag springs will not fix it for long unless you anneal them and re heat treat them. Once they shrink much more than a couple of inches, time for new mag springs. That bullet profile is the worst for feeding also, as the lip of the round coming up can catch on the rim of the case being extracted. |

| A more rounded profile that does not allow the case rim being extracted to catch on the lip of the round in the magazine. We carry springs, as do most retailers who carry a full line of XD parts. A stronger spring will prevent the round being ejected from pushing the last rounds back into the magazine while it is trying to feed, causing the failure pictured above. |

It's flat-nose FMJ. And I didn't mean to suggest that stretching the spring would be a definitive fix, I mostly included that information as confirmation of the faulty magazine diagnosis. And nothing was heated, mostly because I think something that causes a reliable failure to feed just needs to get replaced. As far as where to get new springs, I have no clue. But to me this is unsat performance from factory hardware for a pistol meant for carry. If it's happening to you, I'd make Springfield stand good on their product and give you replacements.

I'd just go over to SpringerPrecision. They have many products for the XD/XDm line of pistols. |
| I had 3 mags for my XD 45 with small cracks on the back at the weld joint. They had expanded slightly and would not drop free. I called Springfield and had three new mags sent out at their expense, without any hassles. Give their customer service a call and see what they can do for you. |

My XDM 9mm had mag springs go bad too. They all stopped locking the slide back after the last round and also if I put them in the gun and pulled the slide back by hand it wouldn't lock with them inserted.
Emailed SA and they sent me 2 new mags which work perfect. The springs on the new ones were also several inches longer than the old ones. |
