I know they discontinued the full rail variant some time ago, but would it be possible to call them up and request a full rail version anyways? Or would they just tell me no and that if I wanted one I'd have to find one someplace else?

You can special order a "custom" from their Custom Shop and for around $3K and in a year's time you'll have your pistol.
OR, it's alleged that the production shop makes an occasional production run of standard production full-railed Operators and sends them off to dealers whom have pre-ordered them. Apparently, they just had a run with the rumor mill saying that most went to California dealers. OR, you can keep watch on the auctions. Gunbroker had three of them listed a couple of days ago with bidding pushing $2k.  Gotta be the ONLY production pistol in recent years that's selling used for 30% more than it sold for originally.

Why do guys want the full rail anyway? just because they dont make them anymore, or is there a use for them?

Didn't say I wanted one, just reported what I knew about their availability.

It's reported that their heavier fwd mass leads to less muzzle flip and better accuracy during rapid fire.  They seem to have a cult following as evidenced by the prices they're bringing on the auctions––in the $2000 range.  Les Baer's Monolith shares a similar heavy mass front end, and sells for less than the used TRP full rail Operators.  Go figure.

there are 2 Full rail TRP's (used) at Pro Armament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
IIRC they are asking almost $1500 for them.

If you call the shop ask for Drew.

The weight up front is nice when shooting quickly but I won't even lie, I got mine because I just think it looks damn cool.  This is America, right?

I want a full railed 1911 so bad I can taste it. I just have a slight problem paying 1800+ for a non custom used 1911. I also want something used so I don't have to worry about getting scratches and dings.

These are not discontinued.  S.A. does not advertise them any more.  They are made once a year.  I just ordered one.  The still have a CA legal model.  I thing the last run was November but don't quote me on that.  I was told there may be a run closer to summer too.

There is something about the bull barrel in this pistol that I like.  It looks like a cannon barrel when removed from the gun.

You have to go through a dealer, you can't order from the factory yourself

http://migunslingers.com/

George at Michigan Gun Slingers is mentioned quite a bit as a source.

As I understand it, the full rails coming from the SA Custom Shop start at $2400.

There's also this at Bud's:

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/786/products_id/411534947

Full rail TRP for $1600.

I've seen quite a few full rails lately on Gunbroker also.

My dealer got his 2 full rail TRPs that he ordered in 2009 in late 2010 I think.  It is a hard gun to find.  Find a dealer that has some one order and put a deposit on one.

Last summer GT distributors still offered the full rail model for $1395.00. I saved all my nickels and pennies for a few months and when I had enough saved up I called in my order only to find that they no longer offered it. I called SA direct and was told that I could place an order directly thru them but it would require 50% up front. I say sure let's do this, what's MSRP. The guy quoted me $1895.00. I had to back out, that's alot of jingle. A few weeks later I found a used one on the EE with a shit load of extras for $1700.00.

There she is on the lower left  I love the Operator, and I like the look of the full length rail.  I can say that it shoots like a dream.

I traded an HK Mark 23 for it, some might say I was crazy, but it just seemed like a much more practical handgun.  I have no regrets at all.

This is my Full Rail Custom Shop Operator in 9mm. I waited 11 months for it... It does have 25 LPI front strap checkering, but I still like these grips.

The base model is around $2600 MSRP.

Mine was about $3200 MSRP, but I paid $2990 shipped...
