The slide lever locks the slide back about once every other mag. I thought it was jamming but it was the slide lever locking the slide back with rounds still in the mag. Any ideas what would cause this ?

Hate to say it, but the most likely cause is your finger. If you learned to shoot 'high thumb' or 'thumb on safety' like I did, your thumb is bouncing around right where the XD slide stop is. I put a bit of grip tape below it, to help me index my finger there.

Failing that, it's potentially a follower problem-it could be hitting the stop. Is this with every mag, or just one?

There is rounds still in the mag when it happens so I dont think its the follower. Its most likely my thumb hiting it. Thanks for the reply.

Well, try the grip tape-it's helped me. I put a half-moon where my thumb goes, and it gives me something to focus on, so the thumb isn't just anywhere.

Of course, I shoot like a retarded monkey, so you may well do without the tape. :) Some of us just need help!
