Just got back from purchasing a Springfield Loaded 1911 and noticed a defect in the barrel.

After purchasing it new from the gunstore I ran a box of ammunition though it and it function great and appeared to be accurate.  I brought it home and did a field strip and cleaning and noticed this in the barrel.

This was taken after cleaning the barrel.  I ran a toothpick along it and it does catch.  Would you recommend sending this back to springfield or should i just leave it alone?

Thanks

I'd let it be, it's not like that'll affect it much.

$400 premium match rifle barrel?  Sure.

$700 handgun?  Meh...

Nothing.  Just wondering if it should be cause for concern or not.

Im just being a smartass ;)

I wouldn't sweat it.  It doesn't look like a rifling defect to me, usually if the button (or broach, or mandrel) is flawed, it kills the whole barrel.

Judging by the direction it seems the burr was raised, it seems more like it came from a tool or cleaning rod.  Im not saying you did it, it would be quite easy for such a thing to happen at the factory.

It would bug me aesthetically, but I'm anal.  All guns have their quirks, whether it be a distinct mark left on the chamber by the slide, or something odd elsewhere, they exist.

Its right near the muzzle, but given that its in-line with the direction the bullet travels, and will likely only lead to a very distinct 'fingerprint' on the OD of the fired bullet, I wouldn't see it as a cause for concern, so long as your groups are similar to other like-price handguns.

Hope I didn't cause it by cleaning.  Used a brass cleaning rod so i don't think that would cause it.  The mark is actually a small dot even though it looks like it is a streak.  The trigger is also pretty poorly machined so I might just send it off to them anyways.  I might put some more rounds in it this weekend before I send it out however.

Was just looking over everything real well.  I field stripped it and ran bore brush through it with kroil, ran some patches through, and inspected the bore.  If the pit was another half and inch in the barrel I doubt I would have ever noticed it.  You know it probably won't make much of a difference but after spending $800 for it I just really can't let this one slide by.  I'll probably send it off to Springfield on Monday and hope to have it back in about two weeks.

How does it shoot? If the bbl shows promise, I'd leave it alone & allow the rds to "smooth out" the bore spot. Once a gun get monkeyed with, sometimes it's not better than before. I'd run 200~ rds thru it before I shipped it off, IMO.

I'll run some through tomorrow and see how it goes.

I don't think it's normal, but I'd see how it shoots before you send it back. If it shoots good enough for you, I'd keep it and not worry about it, personally.

Decided to send it back to Springfield.  As soon as I get it back I'll let you guys know what they ended up doing.  As for other things I noticed before sending it out.

Poorly machined trigger - Nicks and machining marks.
Heavy Trigger Pull - Was almost 7 pounds
Poor coating- Looks like they buffed the slide after applying the black coating causing some of it to be removed.
Would shoot 4 inches below POA at about 15 yards.

They told me I should expect it back in 2-4 weeks.

I hate to break it to you, but that coating will look like hell with any use. It's kinda purty, but doesn't hold up well. Be warned.

Good luck with getting your issues fixed!

It's all good.  This is just a range gun so it won't see much use that would effect the finish.  Normally I won't care very much about the finish but this is my wife's gun so it's a little different.

Got a call today from Springfield letting me know it was ready to be sent back.  I'll post an update next week as I'll be out of town.  Was told they replaced the trigger, barrel, bushing and tuned the extractor.  They are also going to provide a test target.  Excited to see how it shoots now.

Got it back and it looks great.  Here's what they did.

Refinished coating
Replaced plunger tube
New Grip Screw Escutcheon
Replaced Extractor
Replaced Barrel
Replaced Barrel Bushing
Replaced Trigger
Adjusted Triger Weight
Adjusted Windage

The coating on the gun looks much better.  All the new parts look great.  Trigger is light and crisp.  Shot it today and it was still very accurate.  After 100 rounds it had 2 FTFs.  I ordered some CMC Powermags to see if they will help.  Only other problem is the dot on the front sight isn't very bright.  I think I'll go get some white paint and dab it in there.

Overall I think I'm pretty happy with the work they've done
