Hey guys.  I'm looking at purchasing a new revolver.  This will be the first one in years for me since I sold off an old Colt.

So far I've been reading a lot about the 686 models.  The question I have is between the 686 and the 686 plus.

Are there any downsides to having the 7 round capacity?  Or should this be a no brainer and go for that extra round?

Does putting the chambers closer together to fit that seventh round make the chambers less durable?

Any help or opinions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

The 686-4 was last year before S&W starting using MIM parts.  Some folks say the 686-4 was also the best.  S&W L-frames are real nice.  Personally, If I had to choose, I'd take the 696. They're sometimes hard to find.  They didn't make a lot.

I have 686's and 686+'s and both models are built like tanks, you can't go wrong with either IMO.. The only issues I have heard about the 7 rounds has to do with speedloaders and not the 686+.  Some of the 7 round spedloaders are VERY thin walled between the rounds and break pretty easy if dropped.   The plus on the lower left and the standard 686 lower middle and lower right.

I have a 6" 686-5+ and it is just as well made as the old 4" 686-1 I had years ago.  Not a huge fan of the internal firing pin, but did not want a "lock gun" but did want the round butt. Just 1 more round to me now.  At the time I was hung up that a revolver must have 6 but then I got a 649 and it only had 5 so I figured why the hell not 7?

I'm in the market for a lightly used 686 4"; what's the going rate for one these days?
And wow, I loved the photo of 696, just beautiful.
Thanks
