I have a model 36-2, blue matte finish, double action only with a bobbed  hammer- the serial number begins with BDW. I know S&W made lots of different variations for police departments and government agencies. Any one have an idea where this one came from?
thanks for your help.

The only way you would find out that information is going through the records of manufacturer to distributor, from distributor to end customer.
You can contact S&W and see if they will help you out.
But it will cost you.

oh well, thanks for your reply. I was just curious.
I'd rather spend the money on some ammo, shoot it and enjoy it. It's a nice little gun.
Once again thank you for responding.

Wish I could have helped you more. When you pick up a small carry piece like a J frame, you often don't have any idea of where it came from or who the previous owners were.
If you buy it used from a large gun shop, it's almost a guarantee you won't know where it came from.
But hey, you've got one hell of a nice carry gun there.
That's all that matters.

not a problem. It was a straight up trade for a Makarov in .380. Everybody walked away happy.
