How does it rate as a CCW piece and overall as a wheel gun.

I have one is stainless color and love it. Very light and easy to carry tucked in my waist band above my wallet. I figured that if I ever had to use it the DAO would be fine as I probably wouldn't have time, nor remember to cock the hammer. I did put a Wolf spring kit in it though as the factory trigger pull is heavy.

Bought my first 442 sometime in the early 90s, and then sold it in 07'.  Never had a problem with it and great carry gun.  Used to carry in the second pocket inside the left cargo pocket of the OG107 uniform.  Just order a new replacement 442 no lock from Smith last month.  Cannot recommend them highly enough.

Read the latest Guns n Ammo. Have the 442 review in it.

Here is my 642 along with a older 649 all steel J.

Buy a no-lock version while you can. I like them so much, I bought 2.

so whats the going rate on the 442s right now?  i'd really like to get a j frame .38 for concealed carry, and i dont see the need for anything but DAO.

I got the 642 pictured above new in the box for $425 plus tax.  Dealer had several no lock and locks for the same price.  I went no lock.
