I finally shot my S&W 686 a couple of weeks ago and had a hard time gripping the gun. I'd like to get wood grips with checkering. I use it mainly for target shooting and it might serve bedside duty so concealability isn't a must. Oh, and I have medium sized mitts. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

I would make a suggestion first - reconsider your commitment to checkering.  An old-school S&W wheelgunner told me a few years back to try smooth wood grips on my magnum revolvers instead of checkered. It greatly increased my comfort and accuracy.  There is no checkering to bite your hand during recoil, and the lack of checkering actually means more surface area for your hands to contact, increasing control and reducing felt recoil.  It was a real eye-opener to me.

On that theme, I went with smooth factory targets on my 686 and it is a real joy to shoot now, and it looks good instead of having the rubber goodyear grips.  Without the checkering, the grip is really more comfortable and actually feels smaller than the checkered ones.  These are S&W brand (there are some maple ones for sale in the classifieds right now).  Ahrends makes a "retro target" in smooth wood, and so does Eagle.  Ahrends also makes other shapes in smooth wood, too, not just this style. His retro target is slightly smaller than the factory I believe.  He makes others along the lines of the Jordan Trooper and also the JM grip that is popular now (like Jerry Miculek uses).

Good luck.

you may want to let us know what you have on your gun now.

also, "medium size mits" dont mean much to me.  its subjective.

what i would do is to go to your local gun shops in your area and see what they have for your 686.  you may want to bring your gun too jic they dont have one to fit the grips to.

also, if you have any gun shows in your area, that would be another choice.

That is a really good suggestion.  You can see more grips at a gun show around here than in any five stores combined, and try them out unlike the internet.

They're not much to look at, but nothing grips like the Hogue rubber mono-grip.  With the finger grooves, palm swell, bumpy texture and grippy rubber you almost can't let go.

I know it's a shameless plug, but I just happen to be selling one in the EE.

I have Eagle grips on my S&W's now, Secret service on my J-frame and oversize FG grips on my 586.

I've got Pachmayr compacts on it right now. I also have a Hogue rubber rd. to sq. butt grip. I'd like to have a pair of Nill combats or coke bottles but don't want to wait that long. I'll be taking a look at Ahrends and Eagle grips. Any feedback on them?

Actual S&W cokes were made only for N frames, and AFAIK, only the M29. Personally, I hate the feel of standard target stocks and use Pachmyers. I like the grippers, gripper professional, and the decelerator.

My two round butt K frames have Hogue compact monogrips on them.

Pachmayr makes grips other then the compacts too.  have you looked/tried them?  same for Hogue,  they dont just make 1 style of grip for it.

the 586 i got used the original owner had Hogues "grippers" on it and he bought a pair of S&W wood type.  IiRC, they dont cover the front or backstrap of the gun and are like the type you would see on a airweight.  but i keep the Hogues on it since it okay.
