| Hello fellas. I am wondering can i use 44 mag dies to reload 44 special? A friend of mine seems to think that i can. Just wanna get some feedback before we get started. |

The answer is: it depends.
If you get a set marked 44 Spc/Mag then yes it will work for both, die adjustment is a pain, but RCBS apparently makes a spacer ring that simplifies this. If the set is marked .44 Mag then the answer is maybe... My Lee .44 Mag dies don't really work for .44 special: The sizing/decaping die works just fine. The expanding die is too long to work on .44 special. For years I took it apart and added several washers above the floating portion (it worked but was a pain) I finally bought a .44 special expander die. The seating/crimp die is also too long to crimp .44 special, but I have a LFC die that I use on both anyway. Oh, and we have a reloading forum. |
| The RCBS dies will work with either just set them for what your loading. If you are loading for both set the dies for 44 spcl and use the spacer when you load 44 Mag. These dies used to come with the spacer (basically a washer) if you need one I may have one I don't need. |

You can by the spacers from Redding, or thread the die out the 0.125". My RCBS dies for .38/.357, .40/10mm & .44spl/.44Mag all come with the spacer ring! |

It really depends. Some older die sets were made for .44 mag only. I have an old set of RCBS dies like that. I think manufacturers finally realized that making two different die sets didn't really make sense when the die set for the shorter cartridge would load both just fine. All of the new dies I've seen were marked .44SPL/.44MAG, so it's obvious they will do both.
Just check the die maker's info on the die set and you should be good to go. |
