I have never posted here but I love S&W revolvers and have a few different models. My ? is I just love the older J Frames and have a Mod 36 made in 1967 as new with all the papers in the box where the Gent at the time bought it for 75.00 new, I have three model 37s like this as well. All of my J frames are square butt as they fit my hand and I have allways wanted a square but Mod 60 but was even told by S&W they never made one. Well 6 months ago I picked up a square but Mod 60 at a gunshow for 325.00, and when I called S&W with the Ser# they told me it was made in June 1983 but they only made the Mod 60 Cheifs Speciel in a round butt and NEVER a Square butt. I talked to Roy Jenks and he really could not give me a answer. The # on the bottom of the butt are, AEC53xxxx. The little revolver has a 1/7/8 inch Bbl has all of my J Frames do, It also has a wide 1/4 inch smooth target trigger, factory walnut grips with the Smith Logo and is in 98% condition. Can Anyone out there tell me what I have?. This has became my favorite little pocket gun and my Buddies think that Im crazy to carry this little piece everyday. Im really thinking of haveing it engraved and adding a set of Elephant Ivory grips to it, You know what they say, Every Man needs one nice custom Handgun, and I love my 1911s and my Browning P-35 but these little Smith J Frames just sit Dearly to me.
I Thank You In Advance For Any Info That You Have,
My Best Regards To All,
Don

I have to wonder about their record keeping too.

My Standard Catalog of S&W's says the M65 4" model I have was only made in square butt. The 3" model came in round butt. But I have a 4" with round butt!

Could be factory, could be a very skilled mod done somewheres along the way!

+1

A shorter barrel may have been added after it left the factory. I know that *I* would NEVER question/debate Roy Jinks about ANYTHING S&W related..............

Thanks for the feedback, Roy said it was made in 1983 PER Ser #, and is a S&W Mod 60 with a 1/7/8 inch BBL, but was only made in a round butt as ALL Mod 60s were, and are now. I live 20 miles from Wilson Combat and I took it up there and they looked at it under a Microscope!,and they told me that as far as they can tell that the frame has NOT been Allterd in ANY WAY. I will try to get some photos of it on here for you Guys to look at. The other thing that I like about it is the wide 1/4 inch smooth trigger, and I know that could have been added, but the frame I dont see how. I talked to Hamilton Bowen about it and he told me, Dont Shoot It, Dont Carry It, Dont do Anything with it untill I find out what I have. I just dont know what I really have, and like I said I do carry it everyday and have put, maybe three cylinders of mild .38 wadcutters thorugh it and its like most all little Js, just sweet to shoot. My Grandson has told me its his favorite. Anyways I have bent your Guys arms enough so like Isaid I will get some Pics on of Her.
Best Regards To All,
Don.

Could also be on what is called a "deviation" build.  Sometimes when certain factory parts are not in stock due to Q.C. containment or vendor delivery issues, other parts that will work can be substituted on the B.O.M. ( Bill Of Material...also known as the "traveler" ) and production can continue with the "red lined" B.O.M. on a temporary basis.  This is VERY common in several areas on manufacture.

With Smith almost anything is possible.  Could be an uncataloged short run for one of the wholesalers.  Could be a law enforcement special.  Or it could just be Smith using up parts.

I gave a Smith 1 7/8" M60 with a square butt to my mother 15 years ago after the first Gulf War.  I bought it used, and she still has it.  Don't remember the SN for my records are in Florida and she's several hours south of me now as I get ready to go down range again.
