was cleaning my Ruger Redhawk tonight and I noticed something that just doesn’t seem right.  On the outer edge of the cylinder (the barrel side) I noticed a “dent.”  Look as if someone took a center punch and dented the edge of one of the cylinders, and some material seems to protrude into the cylinder.  It seems like a factory defect on this gun, I noticed 2 dents in the same area.  I had this gun for years so I believe its way pass the warranty period.

I just want to know if this gun is safe to shoot, and will the dent affect the accuracy?

I am the first owner of the gun, 200 rounds of Win white box went through it.  I took care in cleaning and shooting this firearm.

Any feed back about this issue would help, thanks in advance.

This post is worth less with out pics, Here are the BIG pics

Had to let my eyes rest after those pictures.

If you're certain that it's past warranty, and don't feel like returning it, I'd say that the damage is
 minimal.

Ruger's are pretty strong, so I don't think you'll have a problem with the safety of the gun.

As far as accuracy goes, I'd make only be concerned with the one on the edge of the cylinder.  As big as the pictures are, I can't see if there is material which protrudes into the cylinder.  If there is, it might affect bullet slightly.  I'd remove any material which flows into the cylinder polish the edge, and call it good.

Thanks for the quick reply, sorry for the huge pics.

I had this Redhawk for about 4 years, mostly it just stays in the safe but it does come out to play once a while.  I am not sure if its covered by warranty or not, i just want to know if its a major issue that i should worry about.  I have never shipped a firearm before, and it seems like a lot of trouble. Just wondering if its something that i can fix in-house.

If you look at pic number 2 you can see a "bubble"....that whole piece does protrude into the cylinder....

Again, thanks for the reply!

While Ruger does not offer a "lifetime" warrenty, they are pretty darn good at taking care of the customer.

As long as the metal does not protrude into the cylinder chamber you should be fine. The only thing I can figure that caused this would be a burr or chip on the drill used to cut the chambers tho I'd expect to see some scoring in the cylinder hole itself also.

You have an interesting situation. If there is material in the throat interferring with the bullets exit, pressure will spike and then drop after the bullet is resized (you will lose a percentage of the gas seal as the bullet moves down the barrel. I would expect that hole may be a little slower than the other five due to a pressure loss (however slight) due to the location of the nick in the cylinder which appears to have breached the throat. This may sound bad, its not. I would clean up the throat with a little 320 grit sandpaper wrapped around a pencil and be patient a little bit is a lot. At this point you will have eliminated the pressure spike as well as the bullet mutulation (for lack of a better word) You are now ready to chronograph the gun, if that hole runs within
around 30 fps either way of average for the 6 its pretty good. Your gun is probably fine but do get any obstruction out of the throat.

(PS......big thumbs down for Fedex....60 bucks to ship the pistol back, and i had to bring the print out from their own web site so show them....."yes i can ship a gun", they had to make a number of calls to make sure, and i had to fight with the mgmt in order for them to ship it.......^%##@^&)

Fed Ex left my Springfield Micro sitting on my porch on it's return from the factory. I make it a point to avoid their shitty service.

THe folks at Ruger are awesome for their customer service!

I think Fed Ex, at least in our area, uses subs to make deliveries and they dont give a crap about anything... drop it and scoot.
