Pyrodex really isn't black powder.

It's fine to take the percussion cap off and leave it for the next day.

Some people will use a device made that uses a C02 charge to blow it out.

Unnecessary if your going out the next day.

To answer if anyone has ever left it loaded for any length of time.

I know some one that had a pistol loaded for around 2 years without caps on .

When he finaly shot it all 6 fired.

I have a few BP Pietta Remington 1858 New Army clones which I have fired extensively.

I conducted an experiment about four months ago. Here's the details.

I started with a freshly cleaned revolver and LUBED the chambers. Big mistake. I then loaded it with Pyrodex 30 grain pellets, 180 grain Buffalo Bore conical bullets, and just to be safe, Crisco shortening in front of the bullets. Percussion caps were CCI #10.

I would leave the gun in the trunk of my car while at work, in the garage at home, and in our bedroom at night. This went on for about a month.

Then I decided to fire it and all six chambers fired, the percussion caps, that is.

I had to charge each nipple several more times before things went boom.

I also tried the very same test described above except after cleaning I used my air compressor to clean the chambers of lubricant. I also omitted Crisco. The result was six BOOMS. The load chronographs an average of 1,055 fps, which, in my opinion, is stout for this revolver.

As for rust, there were no issues. Just clean your pistol with loving care and it will last for many years.
