I see some ammo as 44 S&W Special, and some as just 44 Special. Is there a difference? I know 44 Spl can be shot out of a 44 Mag gun. . . if 44 S&W Special is different from 44 Spl, can it also be shot from a 44 Mag firearm?

One and the same. I believe S&W had a hand in developing the 44S&W spl (from the 44 Russian?) and picked the name but Colt isn't about to stamp S&W anything on their guns so they just used "44spl". The guns and ammo biz has a long history of being competitive
