I'm looking to get a double action .22 revolver, but I don't need it so badly as to be willing to pay for a S&W.  The Taurus appears to be available for much less.  Any problems with them?

Also, what is a good price to find? Any good sources in the Phoenix area?

no idea about the pheonix area.  i have 2 of the SS 94's in .22LR.  both shoot ok.  i had a problem with one of them not locking the cylinder when the hammer was thumbed back.  solved it myself.  the smith is probably much nicer but they are 2x as much.

I don't have a 94, but I picked up a used Tracker in .22 LR a while back for my daughter.  It is no substitute for my 617, but it has had about 500 rounds through it thus far with very good accuracy.  I'm pretty impressed with it for the $150 I paid for it.  I would say that its worth a shot if you can get one for a decent price.

Yeah, I'd love to find any DA .22 for $150! Is the tracker available with anything less than a 6" barrel?

I have a 94 that I bought to teach people how to shoot handguns.  It's a .22 revolver, but it's not great.  I have found that teaching with a GP-100 shooting .38 SP is much more comfortable for the shooter despite the extra weight and recoil.

The factory trigger is absolutely horrible.  It's about a 16# double action pull.  I installed the Wolff spring set (the one they say not to put in the 94) and it works fine, and reduced the trigger pull to a manageable weight.  It's not smooth or anything though, I imagine you'd have to spend quite a bit of time polishing to make it a pleasant trigger.  The grip is also too thin for bigger hands.

There's a reason the Smith fetches twice the money.  It's worth it.  If you want to buy something that you're going to shoot regularly, I'd take a hard look at the Smith before settling for the Taurus.

Yeah, I got lucky on the price of that one.  I checked Taurus' catalog, and they only list the .22 Tracker in a 6.5" barrel which must be what mine actually is.  I really think they're missing the boat as it runs around K-Frame size whereas the 94 is more of a J frame.  I would buy a 4" Tracker in a heartbeat if they'd make it!  My 617 ia a 4".

I have a stainless 94 with a 4" (I think) barrel. It is fun to shoot but not the most accurate pistol. Good enough for plinking and newbies but I wouldn't hunt or target shoot with it.

I have a 96, the mid frame version.  Six inch barrel.  Bought it used for 225 a while back.

No complaints.  As accurate as I am.  Single action is decent.  Double less so, but I rarely shoot it double action.

Not as nice as Smith, but half the money.

I have a 941, I think. It is the blue, 22mag. It's pretty decent as far as accuracy goes. I bought the stainless 22 lr first and my son didn't even get a whole cylinder through it before it broke. A piece broke off the bottom of the hammer preventing it from cocking. The dealer I bought it from  took it back and gave me my money back on the other. For some reason the blue one has a much better action, smoother. I handled another stainless one when I took back the first one and it was very rough like the one that broke. So far, so good with the blue one.

I ve had one for about 9 years. I have never had any problems at all. The only change I ever made was putting some hogue grips on.

As an alternative how about a Ruger SP101?

The SP101 does sound nice.

I don't think very highly of them a quick search of the EE and you'll see why
