I am looking for a .44 Magnum revolver to carry for protection while hiking. I am leaning towards a Taurus for the price, but am tempted by the Ruger. I want a double action, stainless steel revolver. Are the Rugers and Smith&Wessons worth the extra price over the Taurus?

Yes, they are worth it.

If you plan to shoot heavy factory loads through it by the 1000's get the Ruger, if you handload  and plan to shoot nice light loads to plink and then some heavy loads for protection get a Mountain gun 629.

The S&W's a re really nice, I have several in 44 Mag. I can't stop myself.

As a carry piece I vote for the SW Mountain gun too. For SERIOUS 44'ing I recommed the SS Ruger Super Redhawk.

I love my SRH but to carry it other than in a shoulder holster is dumb. I bought my SRH to hunt javalina but it is BIG.

I have a redhawk in a 7.5" barrel, and love it. I added the hogue monogrip a few days ago.

I agree 100%! My current "Outback gun" is a stainless 5-1/2" Ruger Redhawk in .44 magnum, but I am taking a real hard look at the new .44 magnum "Alaskan" as it is made specifically for easy packing. The Smith's are nice revolvers, but none of the three that I owned have held up to a constant diet of full house magnum loads.....

I just picked up the new 4" Redhawk for packing in Alaska.  Sweet!  The 2.5" Alaskan Super Redhawk was too short.  The 5.5" was too long.

4" is just right.

I bought a S&W 629 classic .44 magnum for $550.00 used.  Shoots very nice.  I have had a .44mag Dan Wesson in 1988 and a ruger super redhawk in 1996.  all 3 are/were great guns.

They all have their strong points, eg, Taurus=price point, Ruger=strength, but to me Smith= artistry. S-W costs more, but the way the prices are going on the pre-locks you can probably get your investment back without too much trouble, as long as you can find a reasonble deal to begin with.

So, I found one I like a lot:

Bad thing was, I went looking for one and ended up with three

You can see the other ones on the revolver pic thread.

Depends on what you're after.

If you want super reliable, sturdy shooter, the Rugers are tops.

If you want a shooter and an investment get the S&W.  The value in all of my S&W guns have appreciated to the point where I can at least sell them used for what I originally paid NIB. Not bad, kind of like having your cake and eating it too.

If you want shooter and money is a concern get the Taurus.  Taurus' have a lifetime warranty, so if you break something they should be able to cover it.  I don't have any recenty Taurus guns, but I did fire my friends Taurus M66 and PT99, and I don't have problem with either.  Remember their original linage is S&W K-frame and Beretta 92.

I really do not care for Taurus as a company, I had a milinum that the frame cracked on, years ago and they went out of there way to not resolve the problem. Spend the extra for a better gun/company.

GAWD!! That thing has PERFECT lines and balance!! It is truly gorgeous! That is what the S&W has over every other brand.

Thanks Mike.

Yeah, I like it ALOT. Great shooter.

But this might be my favorite, for just pure looks:

I did not know that N-frame-itis could be as bad as BRD

For me S&W strongest points are not their looks but their Double Action trigger pull.

Ruger Super Redhawk.  It is a rugged device that will serve you well.  Mine has always gone bang without a hitch, after thousands of hot loads.

4inch redhawk,  If I needed another 4inch 44mag I'd get that one.
