I just inherited a Colt Python. It has been in storage for at least 10 years. Being familiar with the smooth actions of the Python, this one is definately gummed up on the inside. I was wondering if there was a way to rectify this without having to take the side palte off the receiver? I has a friend suggest an electrical component cleaner. He said that is would clean out any gummed up lubricant, but won't leave a film or ruin the finish. Any help would be appreciated. Eric |

Be very careful that you don't use something that will remove the blue (or nickle if it is nickled)! Most likely the old oil inside it has simply turned to sludge and needs removing before you relube the gun. Mineral spirits will work for you and will not create issues with the finish (do NOT get it on the stocks!) but remember that after use of any degreaser you MUST relube and wipe down the revolver or it will rust on you. ETA: I have no idea what effect the electrical component cleaner would have on the finish...if any at all...but would not experiment on MY Python to find out! |

make sure the cylinder is seated all the way. I don't think the action could be that gummed up unless it was stored in really bad elements. Close the cylinder and give it a turn then cock it and see if it is smoother. Don't ruin the finish by spraying chemicals up into the action that stuff will leak out when it's sitting there and rest on your finish. Score on the inheiritance. |

The gun was put away way dirty. Even making sure the cylinder is seated, turning it, then cocking it doesn't help. The gun has been in my safe for two years before it officially became mine, it was put in my safe wrapped in an old t-shirt. Prior to that, i have no idea how it was stored. The lock up is tight. I am very certain it just needs some TLC. |

Don't take it apart, unless you have the right tools and know how to use them. Give it a bath in CLP and let it soak. I have had some really dirty ones soak a week before all the crap will drip out. Let the CLP work and then let it drip out and wipe it down. It could take days. |
Correction - you just inherited a quite Valuable Firearm You should take it to a reputable gunsmith to have it Examined and Cleaned |
| Its obvious you have a defective pistol. heck. Colt doesnt even make them anymore just to proove they were crap. You must dispose of it immediately since there are no safeties. the best thing to do is to send it to me and i will exchange it for a NIB ruger GP100. if you prefer a revolver with a safety i can swap you for a NIB S&W 686 with the internal lock. Remember you must be a safe and responsible shooter. |
