I've got a 442 and am looking for some aftermarket grips, but need to know if it's got a a square or round butt.

How can ya tell

Don't believe there are any square butts in that model. However, a sq. butt J frame comes to a point at the bottom of the frame, the round butts are just that, rounded off.

Your 442 should be a round butt frame.

It is a round butt.
They have not made a square butt in years.

If you go to the S&W website they have some pictures showing the difference.

I've been told that every J-frame ever made was done so with a round butt design.

Don't believe everything you hear
J-frames come in BOTH flavours, RB & SB

However, the 442 is built on the Round Butt frame

I believe every J frame on current production is round butt.  But there have been square butt J's in the past.  Owned a two inch Chief's Special with a square butt.

I wish there were more grip options though.  Not many square butt J frame options in sythetic.  I have a pair of pachmayer grips but they're thin for my tastes.  Hogue never made such an animal,  all their J frame rubber grips are for round butts.

I was about to post on the same subject.  I have a J frame Smith Model 640 snubbie w/round butt.  It came with Uncle Mike's rubber grips - I would like to get some nice wood grips.  Any recommendations? I shoot lefty, so contoured wood grips (usually made for right handers) w/ palm swells and finger/thumb shelves are a little irritating in my left hand ( they also do not allow use of speedloaders). Any help would be mucho appreciated

Yeah, i want to get some rubber grips for my little model 36 j-frame. The stock wood grips are too small and i believe it's a "square butt".

yup, I have Pacs on my 63 and do not like them, I have Houge Monogrips on most my other SW wheelguns, but they don't make(anymore, but they did, 63000 was the part # I think) a squarebutt J frame monogrip. They do make a wood sqaure frame grip however.

my favorite J frame is a model 64 2" rd butt 22 cal.......a very fun gun, makes a great trainer for 38 j frames
