I have a S&W Model 64 with a 1.88" (snub) that I have been carrying for most of the year. I would like to have the barrel replaced with a 3" tube. I also want to have an action / trigger job to ensure absolute reliability with whatever I shoot. Finally, I want it bead blasted to give a uniforma appearance. I looked into Smith & Wesson, and also email Grant Cunningham. Grant's wait list is 8-9 months and S&W can get it to me in a matter of weeks. The wait is the issue. What do you all think? This is a nice, smooth, pre-MIM / lock hole revolver that I will carry and I think it deserves some fine tuning by a skilled craftsman. I am not looking to "create a masterpiece" but I do want a reliable revolver that I can carry, shoot, and pass on to my daughter some day. Thanks R/ Mike |

If you find a decent Revolver Smith that doesn't have a waiting list, don't hesitate to let us all know. Does that answer your question about S&W?hinking.gif As for the work you're planning, it boils down to a matter of taste; but you could buy another 64 closer to what you want for less money and have two guns. As a personal matter, I think it's more fun to buy more guns than to pay big bucks to have something I already own converted into something I don't. On the subject of reliability, revolvers generally are as reliable as they will ever be when they leave the factory; it's the old semi-autos you had to pay to make reliable. As a rule, revos don't become unreliable unless an inexperienced mechanic tries to trick them out or one gets damaged or worn out through use. |

The guy I've been using lately is Andy Horvath. He is in the American Handgunner 100. He is an "old school" craftsman, and can do virtually anything. He specializes in single-action revolvers, but also does an excellent job on S & W revolvers. He also recently put together a full-house custom carry 1911 for a friend. Andy is so old-school, he doesn't own a computer or do anything with the internet. For something like you're asking for, I imagine his turn-around time would be very fast. He is also one of the most humble, easy-to-get-along-with guys you'll ever know. Not a bit of arrogance about him. Not to be thick, but you don't think I should have S&W do the work? Thank you for your help R/ Mike VA Beach

To put it bluntly, the last time I had S&W repair a gun for me (a 625 with a cylinder replacement) it took me a month of work to diagnose and repair what they screwed up. Three years and you can't find a 3" model 64? Here's looking for about 3 minutes: Guns America Cabela's |

Thanks Walter and everyone, Yep that is the one. My search has always been "in person" I was looking at Gun Shows and local shops. When I go out of the area on travel I always hit a couple of places. Anyway I appreciate the links to Gun's America and Cabela's and your candid POV concerning S&W smith services. Thanks again Happy New Year R/ Mike VA Beach
