I was cruising through a local store yesterday and had one of the clerks tell me about this pistol. The model I was shown wa s a 4" version with some kind of porting in the front and pretty comfortable grips. I think they were wanting around $400 for it. Are these any good?  I'm mainly ooking for a revolver to mess around with on the range and maybe use while teaching some pistol classes.

Prior to looking at the Tracker, I had mainly been looking at Smith revolvers.

I can't comment first-hand, but only that I also seriously considered a Taurus Tracker several months ago when Davidson's was offering a very good price on the 5-shot, .45 lightweight model (also 4").  What hung me up was the porting.  From research on the various forums, there just seemed to be a concensus that any reduction in muzzle flip that the porting provided was undesirably offset by the increased noise and upward muzzle-flash.  So while I thought it was a quality piece at a great price, the porting queered the deal for me.

I'll be interested to see input from others.

Yeah, the porting was something I took note of also.  I know the porting of one of my 870s hasnt shown an increase in muzzle flash or noise.  Of course that is a long gun, not a pistol.

Get the Smith or a Ruger if your looking for a good DA revolver.
