Anybody know what one of these is worth? It has a fixed front sight and uses a notch on the top of the frame for the rear sight. I didn't measure the barrel, but it appears to be a 4" barrel. Has plastic grips that say colt. Everything is nice and tight on it. Rifleing is in great shape. It has lots of holster wear, I would say the finish is at 40-50%. Serial# is 22XXXX. Would it hurt or help if it was refinished? Thanks for any help.

Do you have a Police Positive, or a Police Positive Special?
These are similar guns but the Special was made with a longer cylinder and frame to handle the .38 Special, and the Police Positive was made for older, short rounds like the .32 and .38 S&W.

Colt Police Positive in .38 caliber #22XXXX was made in 1929.
The .38 Police Positive numbers for that year ran from 185000 to 308999.

If you have a Police Positive Special in .38 Special, it was made in either 1920 or '21.
In 1920 the numbers ran from 190000 to 224999.
In 1921 the numbers ran from 225000 to 241999.

The original grips for a 1920-21 Police Positive Special would be black, hard "Gutta Percha" rubber, with molded in checkering, the word "Colt" at the top and a letter "C" around the grip screw.
For a 1929 Police Positive, the grips would have been checkered walnut with a silver Colt medallion.

Value depends entirely on condition.
A PP would run "about" $225 in an honest 50%.
A PPS would run "about" $250 in 50%.

A re-blue on a common Colt in that condition will basically not really affect the value.
Any collector's value is always destroyed by re-blues, but a PP or PPS in that condition really has no collector's value, so basically you'd have a pretty shooter.

It is a Police Positive Special. The price is right on this one so I will pick it up. Thanks for all the info.
