I apologize if this thread has appeared previously, but I’ve searched all over and can’t find it.

My question:
I have a Ruger Blackhawk .357 Magnum.
I want to shoot reduced loads below those shown in the .357 Mag section of my Sierra manual. Using either 125 gr JSP or 158 gr JSP bullets. I want to get into the .38 Special area, even as low as the minimum for the .38 Special if possible. How low can/should I go?

Many thanks.

Roy

I will show .38spec loads without issues.

Google 357 loads for cowboy action.  Those guys have to keep velocity under 1000 fps and frequently shoot loads down around 650-750 fps.

Something like 2.7gr AA#2 under a 148gr HBWC (Hollow base wad cutter) with the bullet seated flush to the case edge and light crimp.

Consult a proper up to date loading manual to be sure.

This is one of the cheapest loads out there - the brass will seem to last forever if you stick with a bare minimum crimp.  You can load about 2590 rounds from a single pound of powder. Cast (with hollow base pin) slugs, tumble lubed, are quick and cheap to make.

Will make you compare your 357 with shooting 22LR.

Easy way would be to buy some Remington or Magtech 38 Short Colt.  A ~130gr bullet only going ~700fps.  Very mild.

If you are set on reloading in 357 Magnum cases look up cowboy action loads.  Hodgdon's Trail Boss or Vihtavuori N32C Tin-Star would both be an excellent candidates for super light bunny fart 357 Magnum loads.

Why would you not just shoot .38's out of it? Would be much easier.

You could also shoot the shorter .38 Short and Long Colts if you can find them.

reload 38 spl.   2.7gr bullseye with 148 HBWC or 158gr with 3gr bullseye.  both super accurate and 700-750 fps....very mild

I've used Black Hills 158 gr cowboy loads and my gun is very pleasant to shoot.  You can search on the net for cowboy action reloading data and get what you want, I'm sure.  I think they use Unique powder from the smell and dirt of it, and these loads have a velocity about 750 fps.

Many thanks guys. I am just going to use .38 special loads out of the Sierra for 125 gr & 158 gr JSP  and the Lyman for 125 gr & 158 gr LSWC.

Hornady's 9th edition shows six different powders with 158 gr lead bullets that produce 700 fps in an 8" barrel, and 4 loads that show 750 fps with a 140 gr bullet.

That's only 50 fps faster than their slowest 140 gr and 158 grs for .38 Special.

In either case, 3.3 grains is Unique is listed as the lowest load for both .38 Special and .357 Magnum when using their 158 gr lead bullets.  I use Unique a lot in reduced loads from handguns to the .45-70 as it handles large case volumes well (although you'll need a polyester batting wad in the .45-70).

That said, .38 Special brass is significantly cheaper, and carbon rings are not a problem if you clean after every range session, so I'd advise just using a .38 Special case.

I like using .357 cases. I loaded up some 158 gr plated SWC with 5.5 gr of titegroup and out of my 6.5" blackhawk the clocked just under 1000 fps and shoot like a .22 lr. Granted the gun is fairly heavy. Drop that down to 4.5 gr and it would be even more tame. For the lightest loads Trail Boss is probably the way to go.

Carefully you don't stick a bullet.  I went down to 2.7 of 700-x and it meters like crap so I got some variance.

Well this happened.

Now I'm at 3.7 at around 720fps
