My dad bought this back in the '80s and I'm trying to learn a little about it. I know next to nothing about them other than I've always wanted one.

Anyway, he sent me to find out what I could about it.

Serial is AWE56**

Model is M586-1

Some smudges and glare in the pics, but its in very, very good condition. Probably less than 100 rounds through it.

I appreciate any help.

That is a handsome weapon! I had a model 27, made in the late 70s-early 80s; I like the way your underlug extends all the way forward.

Shipped from the factory in 1987. Best guess for the month is sometime May through early July.

Sort of what I came to post, worth a lot more than he paid for it I have a 8 3/8" 586, fun gun to plink with from a bag.

Oddly enough, exactly what I paid for a 4" 586 ten years later..

The 6" 586 is my grail of revolvers.
IMO much better balancing than the four inch versions.

Put a set of these on it:

Also, shoot some .38spl wadcutters out of it. It's like shooting a .22 but a bigger hole.

Nice gun.  My first S&W was a 586 just like that one.  Wound up trading it for a factory ported 629 but should have kept it.

The only revolver I've ever shot that was more accurate than my 6" M586 was a S&W M14 (target revolver in .38 special).

Keep it.  Shoot it.   Clean and lube it properly and enjoy it.

$650-$750.  Maybe more if you still have the original box, paperwork, etc.

Looks sharp, but that line on the cylinder seems like it has seen more than 100 rounds.
How does the recoil plate look?

Nice pistol. I remember the first pistol I ever bought years ago. It was a 629 with an 8 3/8" barrel. It was a tack driver and only cost me $425.00 nib.

The S&W 586 is an excellent 357 Magnum revolver designed to handle long use of heavy loads.

Check with S&W and see if it needs to be sent back for the "L Frame Improvement Program".

Never mind... I see the M stamped on the pistol.
