I have been thinking about getting a Webley...many on Guns America; it seems a converted .455 would be best, using lead bullets and .45 autorim brass....anybody try this?  I assume you need half moon clips to use .45 ACP rounds....but would use lead bullets, Trail boss or even BP....any advice on this?

I assume you talking about a Webley Mark VI.  First up it depend on if you have a Webley that has had its cylinder shaved.  If it is shaved for 45ACP then yes 45 Auto Rim or 45 ACP on moonclips will both work.  The full moonclips for a S&W 25/625 (easy to get) work just fine with a Webley Mark VI.  Shooting full power factory 45 ACP in a Webley will wear it out pretty quick.  Light loads, lead bullets with velocity at or below 750fps will be a lot gentler on the old Webley.  No need for Black Powder,  Trailboss would probably be an excellent choice but any good smokeless load on the lighter side would probably work.  The original Webley loads was a 265 gr bullet only going 600-700 fps

If the cylinder has not been shaved for 45 ACP then 45 ACP or 45 AR will not work, you will have to find 455 Webley ammunition.  Fiocchi and Hornady and maybe one or two other companies are still occasionally loading 455 Webley and it can be order online.  Accuracy should be better with the original .454 diameter bullets.

Good luck,  I recently picked up a NIB Webley Mark IV 38/200 and it is a fun little revolver to shoot.  I really want a Mark VI but the right one has not come along, yet.  Supposedly Webley and Scott (still in buisness) might make new Mark VI based on the original prints.  If they do that I will be buying one.

MCB, this was very helpful! I found a Webley, .455 "redone" to .45ACP on Guns America...I would love to get a new one from W&S but the .455 ammo would not be as easy as the .45 ACP/ACP rim.....I will keep looking, would like to handle one before I jump on this, but I like the history with the MkVI.....thanks again for your post, it was very helpful! v/r W

I would never buy a "shaved" MK-VI unless I got a chance to look it over first. I've seen them so beat by .45 acp ball ammo they were terribly loose and stretched.

This right here. In fact, I'd rather have it in original configuration, and find the correct ammo for it.

Same. Just know that a .45 ACP load is a "proof load" in a Mark VI. If someone was feeding them a steady diet of .45 ACP they're going to be pretty beat and potentially unsafe.

I have a converted MkVI. There's a number of loads suitable for it that you can find on the internet, or in a reloading manual (if you pay close attention to the pressure levels they mention). The benefit of .45 ACP is that you can have slightly more powder in the load than in the shorter .455 case without breaching the pressure threshold. The "6 tons of pressure" stamped on the side is referring to long tons, so it's 13,400 PSI.

shooting a .455 webley
Schofield .45's will work in a webley. I had a spencer in .45 schofield and it's nothing but a long barreled pistol. but the RNFN 250 gr bullets shoot real well in my non-shaved .455 webley.

+10 I would never buy or recommend buying a shaved Mk VI without inspecting it. Most have had the piss shot out of them with 45 ACP BALL and can get very loose from the abuse.

For a 45 conversion just use regular lead .452 bullets and load to the mild side of the 45 ACP reloading manual.

the .45 schofield rounds work just fine in the .455 webley and they are the right power range. and yes, I have both and shoot them. My .455 webley is pretty loose but it shot ok, with my schofield rounds.
