Hi to all
Recently purchased a Ruger GP100 with fixed sights and 3" barrel. Yesterday, was surprised at the range to find that it shot at least 3" below the POA at 21 feet. The sight comes to a rounded point at top, so probably would not take much to flatten it to bring barrel up. Meaning a gun smith that is since I would not try to do it myself. I have fair amount of experience, so this is not a "first gun" situation. I plan to see if Ruger customer service might be of some help since it is a pinned sight. Posting this mostly to see what other might have experienced. Mr Mac |

Thanks for the replies.
The sight picture was setting the front sight in the notch with top of front sight flush with top edges of the notch. Was shooting 130 grain FMJ Remington. Had not given ammo a lot of thought initially because of the distance being only 21 feet. Will look into trying the 158 grain loads. Mr Mac |

Heavens. One thousand apologies!!!! I really thought I had mentioned these were 38 special. Again I apologize. I have always had good luck with my 9/40/45 autos shooting to point of aim (most right out of box). This was my first revolver project and was purchased for the power of 357 mag. Mr Mac |

These sights are set up for 158grn .357 magnum loads. .38spl will hit lower, as was said above, try some .357 magnum rounds and see where you are hitting.
FWIW, I also have the Wiley Clapp edition 3" GP100, same POI/POA issue with .38spl as you described. I think it actually mentions this in the literature that came with mine. |

You shoot 38's out of your WC??? Now I'm not making any judgements or anything but your breath smells like fancy feast. |

I guess a .22lr conversion in an AR really gets your goat... All kidding aside, I do shoot my share or .357. I teach NRA Pistol and the GP100 with 38s is a good revolver to let people try who have never shot one. Eventually we move up to 357 magnum.... Frickin' Oh Aters..... I wanted to add a last thought to this post. It has been very educational for me. I had no idea that the ammo would have so much influence on the POA/POI of this Ruger GP100. Especially at the distance I was shooting. For many years now, my shooting has been with 9/40/45 pistols and even a 357 Sig. The wife has always been the big revolver fan. Although, there is no surprise here. These gun forums are always a gold mine of information. Mr Mac |

Mr Mac,
I want to apologize (a little) for the joking around, but I am glad you got you answer. I would like to add though, not all 38spl is the same. The range loads with wad cutters we used to used shoot are very mild and some of the self defense 38spl+P can be stout. All are going to hit somewhere different, that is the one of the very few down sides of owning a 357magnum revolver. The other side of the coin is that there many more possible loads you can shoot from this revolver (bunny farts to bear killers), you just have chose a load and see where the POA/POI are for that load. One final word (from me..for now) concerning 38s in a 357, pay attention cleaning the cylinder. It is easy to gunk up the cylinder shooting 38spls to the point the 357 cartridges will no longer chamber in the cylinder. Enjoy. Quoted:

Gemini Customs makes a pinned front sight for the 3" GP100, but I don't have personal experience with them. You have to clamp and drill the hole for the sight though.
I don't know what height their sights sit at. As has been said, most of the fixed sight revolvers, Ruger or S&W, are designed around the 158gr. loads, but of course, almost all of the economy loads are in lighter weights. |

What fun is the internet without a little ball busting?
OP - experiment with different loads, special and magnum, to find the best compromise between POA/POI and your ability to control recoil. The GP100 is generally a pretty soft shooting wheelgun especially with a set of Lett grips in place. Altamont makes the standard size Letts now. The Compact Lett's are still like hens teeth. |

Update: Did get a reply by email from Ruger. They indicated that they do not have front sights for the GP100 in other heights. Mr Mac Gemini Customs "small wonder sights" |
