Hi, I just got a S&W model 686 that came with wood grips. The finger spacing on it is WAY too big. I have small hands. So I have a few questions for all of you if you don't mind..? 1. can anyone recomend a style of grip or a website with several on it so I can check out what is out there? 2. Is that something that is pretty easy to change- ie could someone follow instructions to switch grips on their own or do you need special tools? 3. What are your personal preferences wood or rubber grips? Thank you! I appreciate it. -val |

In order. Most people with small hands like the Hogue grips. These seem to be a better fit for small hands. Hogue makes grips from fancy hardwoods, or rubber. www.getgrip.com/ One advantage of the Hogue Mono-Grip design is, it's much more secure on the gun than others that have a screw through the side. Changing out S&W revolver grips is easy. Simply use a good-fitting screwdriver to unscrew the screw on the grip, and the two sides come right off. Installing a new grip depends on the type grip chosen. The Hogue is different in that it requires a special stirrup be installed on the bottom of the guns frame, but complete instructions are enclosed. As to material, for appearance it's tough to beat fancy wood. For good grip for actual shooting, rubber offers an excellent grip, even if your hands are wet, and rubber helps reduce felt recoil. Rubber is much cheaper, wood looks better. Strictly a matter of personal preferences. |
| I agree....I have a S&W 357 model 686. My wood grips cracked after a camping trip and firing off of rocks. I put on a set of Hogue grips and love them. Changed my other revolvers grips to Hogue also. You won't be disappointed.hippie.gif |
Having mentioned small hands, I would recommend that you take a look at a set of Jerry Miculek speed grips. They are made by Hogue out of Pao Ferro wood, IIRC. I have a set on a S&W 625 and they are awesome. They tend to fit all different sizes of hands very well; I have rather large hands and like these grips more than any other I've ever tried. Good luck!! |
