I am looking at picking up an older model smith model 49.  I don't know much about the 49 what can you guys tell me about them? Is it ok to shoot +p through?  I have a pretty beat up 4" model 19 that I was contemplating sending back to smith to have it gone through and redone, but I'm considering offering it up as a trade.  I got the 19 for a good price, but it needs some work, timing is a little slow.  Guy wants 350 for the 49.  Is that a fair price, and would the 19 be a fair trade on both ends?  Thanks guys.

The older J frames will handle +P, but I wouldn't make a habit out of it.  They weren't designed for the round and +P will accelerate their demise.  If you want the hump back look and a little more poop I'd suggest the 649, stainless steel pre-lock .357.

Personally I would pay $350 for a M49 in good or better condition without much thought

While the S&W 49s aren't that common, I'm not really sure I'd trade a Model 19 for one.  With where the price is on new no-lock 442s these days which are rated for +Ps, I'd probably go that route for a carry BUG than trading for a model 49.

As for trade value, it depends on what your Model 19 is (i.e. engineering change number), overall condition, what stocks are on it, how much finish, so on and so forth to figure out how much its worth and whether a straight up trade would be worth it for you and him.

All that said, I'm partial to model 19s so I'm not sure I'd let one go for a J frame...

If the 49 in is good shape I would pay $350 for it. I really like my factory nickel one. It eats +P rounds just fine though I try not to feed it a lot. Mostly feed it target reloads.

Have had a old 649  (.38) for years, it's still one of those I will not part with

As for +P ammo, S&W says that any J-frame that is a "dash" model (-1, -2, -3, etc.), it's safe for +P. No dash, no +P.

My .o2

If the 49 is in even decent shape, why on earth have you not bought it yet?

Wish I found a $350 model 49, pounce on it!
