...and was actually impressed. I've been pondering getting one in a 5-shot .44 Mag as a woods gun for some time, and took a look at a new example in .357 recently. The trigger was smooth and had a reasonable double action pull, with a clean single action break. The finish was flawless. Barrel to cylinder gap looked very good and perfectly square, there was little to no discernible cylinder play. Lockup was solid on all cylinders. I guess the real test is if it stays that way. A lot of smack is talked about these guns, especially of the trigger components, but it's the end result that matters most. Just thought I'd share.

For comparison I've had a S&W 629 Power Port and 625 Classic. That 629 was the finest out of the box revolver I've come across, and the 625, while a bit rougher and sloppier, still shot very accurately.

I have a Blue Taurus Tracker 44mag with the 6.5" barrel.  I have a little over 200 rounds through it so far.  I am a wheel gun fan and have many.  The tracker shoots as well as any 44 I ever had or have now.  I am completely satisfied with it.

Having a 44 mag in a size equal to a S&W L frame is great for carry.   It holds 5 rounds and that is plenty for me.  That is all I can load in my 3 screw Blackhawk, so I don't feel I am giving up anything.  A speed loader for a Charter Arms 44 works perfectly in the Tracker.  The porting and "ribber" grips really help with the recoil.

I don't shoot really heavy loads through my Tracker because it is a lighter weight gun, and at my age I don't like my hands taking a beating . A 240 grain LSWC at 1000 fps makes a comfortable load to shoot and will take care of anything I will need to shoot with it.

I bought mine during a Taurus promotion at a local outfitter store for $349.00.  Probably the best deal I ever got on a new gun.

Hope this helps if you are thinking about purchasing one.

I own a Taurus tracker 4" ported SS in .41 Rem mag.  It has been a great sidearm for me.  It is my go-to hunting sidearm.  It has been exceptionally accurate, handles great, has a good SA trigger and a decent DA trigger, the ribber grips are superb...  I've put ALOT of rounds through it... shoots like the day I got it.

Love that pistol.

How is the crane lockup in front of the cylinder?  I have a 85UL and the cylinder is slightly "wobbly" at the front.

My 85SS  locks up like a S&W at the end of the ejector rod.  The Tracker locks up at the yoke to the frame.  The ejector rod plays no part in the lock up.  Seems really solid and stronger to me.

My attraction to the Tracker, specifically the .44 Mag, is that it's the only 44 magnum in what is essentially a medium frame.  Especially in S&W forums, seems anytime anything Taurus is mentioned people just go into tirades about how crappy they are.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Plateshooter, I shot nothing but full load magnums out of the 629 but I have a feeling that may be a handful in the Tracker. That gun with it's 7-1/2 barrel was a pain to carry around. The 4" Tracker looks and feels perfect. I have no problem downloading some mags or buying some specials.

Rick A,  May I suggest a 240 LSWC and 7.5gr of Unique in 44 mag brass.  It's like a 44 special +p.  It is very accurate in both of my 44s and has enough recoil to make it fun but not too punishing.  I am planning on using that load on my hog hunting trip this year.

This is the same reason I chose the tracker in .41.  I can tell you the ribber grips help alot.  They make a titanium framed tracker and a SS.  Mine is the SS.  I'd probably recommend the SS.  I've shot both and the extra heft of the SS helps.

With that said, I have shot some stout loads out of mine, 240 grain Winchester Supreme Silver tips, and my own 210 grain Hornady XTPs over 21 grains of H-110... while not a plinking round, they are not uncomfortable in my tracker.

Yup, I concur. I have the 4" .41 tracker and have several hundred rounds down the pipe. I have only used factory rounds as I don't have the ability to reload for it (I wish). I use it for those times when I don't "think" I will need a gun. Maybe a quick walk around the block with the dog or to run an errand 2 miles from home in the middle of the day. I like my Glock 21 with the 13 round mags most of the time. The tracker is easy to carry and should put a hurt on anything I tag with it. I am very happy with the trigger and the accuracy.

ive got a tracker also. 4inch bbl .44 mag. best big bore woods gun on the market in my opinion. light, accurate, hard hitting. and no problems at all, even with heavy buffalo bore loads through it just for fun.

I have a 4" Titanium Tracker 455, which is a 45acp 5-shot. Incredibly light. I plan on keeping this gun, as they're pretty rare and it's fun to shoot.

I have a .41 magnum Tracker as well, and it's my backwoods fishing companion.  You just never know where the 2 or 4 legged predators will appear.  I've never been a Taurus fan, but this gun has surprised me.  The trigger is smooth, and the gun is very, very accurate.  I have not shot it as much as I should, as the only locally available factory ammunition has been prohibitively expensive.  Also, factory ammo tends to be of the "hunting" variety, and is loaded pretty hot.  While the recoil isn't a killer, a hunting load from the gun will let you know you've just pulled the trigger.  Georgia Arms has had 50-round packs of "Cowboy Load" .41 mag at the last few gun shows, I might have to pick one of those up to try.  They're cheaper, and might be a bit more pleasant to shoot to get some more trigger time with the gun.

However, I just got a set of dies for it last night, and I expect it'll be seeing a whole lot more trigger time once I collect a bit more brass.
