I recently purchased a Smith and Wesson model 042 from my step dad, I have never heard of this model.  I tried doing some research on it, but have not came up with much.

Anyone have any insight to this gun? I read it was a factory defect that they re stamped with a different model number,  but I can't find out anything on it, value wise.

I paid $200 for it, it has hardly ever been fired, less than 1 box of ammo.  My step dad carried it wrapped in a shop towel, tucked away in his truck tool box for as long as I can remember.

So I turn to you, the gurus here, if anyone has any advice on this Smith model 042, I would be thrilled to know whatever you can tell me. (Mainly looking for values if any, since I have developed a recent addiction to AR-15s, I'm looking to fund another rifle)

Thanks.

Looks to be plenty of articles if you Google search "S&W mod 042".

Nice revolver!

The 042 were originally supposed to be stainless 642's  but S&W couldn't match the frame color satisfactoriy, IIRC. So they blued them instead and restamped the model number. There is nothing mechanically wrong with them.
