A friend of mine gave up on his MkII in frustration and asked me if I could dink with it while he's away on vacation. Since I don't own one, I ended up downloading the manual PDF from Ruger's website and followed each step. Seemed pretty easy until all was said and done. Once reassembled, the bolt retracted completely, cocked the hammer, moved forward and locked up again normally. I dry-fired, heard the hammer fall, repeated the process and that's where things got odd. Checked with my friend and that's what he's been seeing all along.

After the hammer falls and I manually pull the bolt back again, it sticks in the rearward position. The bolt stop isn't engaged, it's just a very clear drag going on. If I give it a tap, it'll slug its way forward again but it's definitely hung up on something. I think I've gotten it right, everything feels fine until I actually drop the hammer - I'm just really unfamiliar with the guts of the gun. Has anyone else run into this or is this beyond "user error" and into the realm of "warranty/find a gunsmith"?

I think your words, "I'm just unfamiliar with the guts of the gun" speaks volumes. Have him take it to a smith.

Good advice and I almost took it. But then I figured I'd just buy it from him if I broke something . And, after all the head-scratching, I found the problem just as I started detail-stripping - bloody hammer pivot pin was never seated in its hole in the frame! Don't know if it was my friend's tinkering or if he unknowingly bought it that way. It was backing out more and more, letting the hammer get pushed up into the bolt. A few dowel taps and it's riding smooth as anything. I'll take it out to the range later today to make sure nothing goofy happens with it live but I'm thinking we're good here.
