A coworker is selling his (non-MKII) for $250.
Has the case, hogue grips, and 4 15rd mags.
I haven't seen it, but he says it is in excellent shape, <1k rds through it.

I've been looking for an -89 for awhile, but all the ones I've seen are pricey (for a P89).
Does this sound like a decent deal?

not a super deal, but not terrible.  Pristine 89s are selling around 299 here.  IIRC, older 85s are mag specific, so if you need more they may be harder to find.

They don't use P-series mags?
That would be a deal breaker, since I'm looking for a companion to my PC-9.

Thanks for the info.
All the P89s I've seen lately are $350-$400.

if you look at the different mags on this page there are different serial number ranges for the mags

eta:  I honestly don't know what the difference is

That's a deal-breaker if it is an older model.
Dang, I always thought all P-series mags are the same.

That might  explain why some of my mags have provem to be unreliable in my PC9.

So, thanks again!

I don't know if the P85 takes different mags, but the P89 does, depending on how old it is. Ruger moved the position of the mag catch slightly (up or down, I can't remember right off the top of my head) on the later P89 guns. If you check Ruger's website, they have the serial number listed when the change was made. This is why they have specific mags for specific serial numbers.

I have an older P89 (made in '91 or '92, I can't remember exactly when I bought it) that takes the older mags. Some of the older guns (like mine) will work just fine with the newer mags, some won't and need the older mags. Just depends on the particular gun. I was thinking that the P85 all used the older style mag, but maybe they don't. If you want a gun that is compatible with your PC9, I think you'd be better off looking for a newer P89 or a P95. That way, you have guaranteed (or as close to it as possible, anyway) mag compatibility, since the PC9 uses the newer style mags. Good luck!

There are 89s that use the other mags also!?!?
It was suppposed to be nice and simple!

Thanks for the info, guys!
I'll keep an eye out for a newer P89...

Also if you go for the P-85 you may want to check on any recall work. On the early models there was  an issue with the firing pin safety.  This was fixed in the mkII.

This notice involves a free safety modification to the safety and firing pin mechanism of P85 9mm pistols manufactured between 1987 and 1990. Download this notice for specific details on affected units and for instructions on how to obtain this free factory-installed modification.

maxx, it just depends. If the mags are of the older style, maybe yes, maybe no. Newer style are interchangeable. If you're ordering one, just order the newer style and you should be OK. That's the beauty of the older P-Series guns. Mags for the late P89, P95, the PC9, are all interchangeable.
