Just wonderin if anyone else has had problems with th enew external extractors on Kimbers. I posted this on the main handgun forum but thought I'd throw it in here to see if any other recent purchasers have seen this. I just got a Pro Carry and took it to the range a couple days ago. Love the gun, pride in workmanship is evident. It cycles fine but is throwing spent cases everywhere at extraction. They go straight up and come down on top of my head, they go a litte to the right, a lot to the right and sometimes just come straight back into my face. I'm getting ahold of the dealer I bought it from tomorrow and going to send it back to get it looked at, just wondering if this was a fluke or if others are seeing the same thing with the new extractor. |

I've had 4 Kimbers with the external extractor. Still have 2 of them. All of them worked fine, with none of the ejection issues you mention. Get in touch with Kimber. They will take care of you. I actually prefer Kimbers external extractor now over an internal one, but wont argue with either. |
I would buy that, except for two things. 1. Most of the worlds premier combat proven handguns have external extractors. 2. When someone like Larry Vickers specifically prefers them, I beleive there is a reason why. I just see a nujmber of ways, following both Murphy's law and the laws of physics, where an external can have some advantages in an extreme situation. For me that means that both work, and work well, but I think in really foul environments, the external has a slight edge. Then again, lots of people think I'm nuts for loving 1911's in the first place (not to mention SIR's and Aimpoints).

The difference to me is between a factory or custom tuned extractor. If the pistol is an "off the shelf" factory 1911, I prefer internal. I've had far better luck with them. Custom tuned external extractors by the likes of Vickers, Yost, Heinie, Liebenberg, etc. are a different matter all together. Vickers does state he prefers external in his American Handgunner article , but also states a completely new external extractor needs to designed by a manufacturer. That does not sound like praise for the current crop of external extractors in my book. So, I prefer to keep my 1911's as close to Mr. Brownings original design as possible. |
As would be all built after 1927 or so...the last year the 1911 was produced... |
The newer Colt series 70 is close enough. So are Springfield's somewhat mil-spec models. |
