I am torn between these two guns and was wondering if anybody knows if there is a big enough difference between the two to justify the extra $300-$400 price difference?

I am very pleased with my TRP. Accurate, reliable, well-built. I bought it from a board member on the EE for a very nice price.

Thanks guys.  I have pretty much decided to go with the TRP based on several factors not the least of which is the recent complaints several people have had about the Kimber's FTE.  I have probably talked to 100 people about these two guns and about half have commented negatively about the Kimber in some way.  So far I have only heard one person complain about the SA and it was a cosmetic complaint.  That coupled with the lifetime warranty on the TRP has made this a pretty easy decision despite the price difference.

My TRP had a few problems that were irritating but fixable. I think Kimber has a better fit/finish OOTB but the Springfield has advantages too.

TRP problems:

POI way low -- 4-6" @25y I had to get a replacment front sight from Springfield. They wanted me to send it in to them to be replaced. Cheap fix but PITA. This is pretty common with SA based on the threads at 1911forum.com. I always wondered WHY? Are they trying to make it lock up tighter by using too long of a link? It made me a little suspicious.

Ejector is not pinned in, it is loctited -- except when they forget to apply the loctite! DOH! Cheap fix.

Razor-sharp rough unfinished edge at top rear of magwell prevented smooth insertion of magazines. Cheap fix (file) that should have been noticed during assembly.

The 20LPI frontstrap checkering was hard on the hands. I prefer the Kimber 30LPI. Personal preference.

On the upside you can easily replace the SA integrated keylock and get a better trigger pull for about $10 and have a regular 1911, whereas you can never really have a standard 1911 configuration with the Kimber (ie internal extractor + no FPS).

I loved my Kimber, but I would still buy the TRP if I was you.

Springfield makes a great gun. But my first choice would be the TLE.

Another vote for TLE.

After break in, my TLE/RL has been 100%.

Actually, I'd get the Warrior over both guns!  I've got a Warrior on order, so I may be selling my TLE/RL soon.  Great gun, but I think the Warrior will be even better....

probably too late for your decision, but I have a TRP and just bought a TLE/RL.  The TRP had the dreaded low/left disease, but they took care of it back at Springfield...1500 rounds later, I have zero complaints.  Now...first 200 rounds went off without a hitch in the TLE/RL.  No sighting problems as with the SA TRP.  The Meprolights are a bit bigger and brighter than the TRP's Trijicons but both are effective.  The finish is better on the TRP, however it was about $200 bucks more, so I expect it to be prettier.  I'm very happy with both so far

You could be right about the Warrior...I thought about it, but no much written about it on the Kimber site, no pics, etc.  Just too much blind faith required to lay down a grand for something I can't see or even evaluate the actual specs on.  So instead, the TLE/RL with Streamlight MX3 gets home duty while the TRP becomes the carry gun...and I shoot BOTH by the way...I do agree you have to practice with what you have

I have a TLEII (external extractor) I bought against my better judgement and prejudice for the original design 1911...not a single problem with about 1000rd. so far of factory Fed. Am. Eagle ball and WW SXTs using Wil;son #47...not #47D...mags. I really have come to like...and more importantly, trust... this gun!

TLE.  I've got one that I carry every day in a Safariland Level III.  I had a problem earily on with it but that was because the slide to frame fit was soo tight it had to wear in.  Right now I'm going through firearms instructor class with it.  Sig 226's have had problems all day but not my TLE.

Actually, I've now fallen in love with this gun...

Looks like I'll have to sell more than just my TLE/RL......
