| I was thinking today about the MK23, I know what SOCOM means, but what does the "MK" stand for? |
| From what I understand the MK23 is marketed for the military, and the “Mark”23 is marketed for the civilians, same gun through? Just different markings? If I am wrong I know someone will correct this, there are a lot of very smart people here! I am just wondering where the “MK” “Mark” came from. |
| They are essentially the same pistol. They have different markings on the slide and IIRC the military is chambered to NATO .45 ACP specs while the civilian is chambered to SAAMI specs. The difference is about .002 in the chamber IIRC which does not amount to a hill of beans. |

The US Navy uses MK (number) designation for their weapons. Ex: Mk 48 Mod 7 torpedo, Mk 11 Mod 0 sniper weapon system, Mk 46 Mod 1 LMG The SOCOM offensive handgun system is Mk 23 Mod 0 Mark is just Mk spelled out, to differentiate the civvie product from govt issued. |
