Hey all. I'm still REALLY wanting a USP and going to try to buy one around the time of Knob Creek, whether I go or not. But I'm having a hard time deciding between a 9mm or a .45. 9mm is cheaper and JHP will still put a nice sized hole in someone, but .45 is bigger and I already have and shoot a 1911, so it'd be nice to stay with .45 ACP for pistols for now. However, I was wondering...would it be safe to shoot my own reloads through a USP45? Also, is lead safe in a USP? This would be strictly for plinking and target practice and I would be using JHP's for self defense.
But anyways, thanks in advance! Oh and any "persuasion" pictures to help me get a USP are welcome |

Either that or get an aftermarket land & groove rifled barrel if you just have to shoot lead. That's what I do with my Glocks. Polygonal barrels don't work & play well with cast lead bullets.
There are those that would dispute this, they'll say that thorough and proper cleaning will resolve the leading problem but manufacturers reccomend not doing it. It doesn't take much leading for pressures to rise to seriously unsafe levels. I have been trying plated bullets for practice in my USP/C with great success lately. Tthey're a lot cheaper than clad bullets & don't lead up the barrel, unless I load them too hot. Too high a velocity will strip the plating and cause lead smearing in the barrel. I'm not trying to set any speed records, they are, after all, pratice rounds (what that means to me is a less expensive way to get lead down range to sharpen my skills). My .02 worth, YMMV. |
