Tomorrow, I plan on picking up a USP compact. It will be my first HK. I am torn on whether to go with the 9mm or the .45, and I am looking for advice. I don't want this to turn into a debate over which caliber is better in general, just which you would recommend in this particular pistol. For background, I have a good number of semi auto pistols already, and except for the .22s and one 1911, they are all 9mm. Should I stick with the 9mm or should I go for the .45?
I post in this forum because I'm not sure if there is one caliber that tends to cause problems with this platform, or whether there is some general opinion I haven't come across in my research. Also, for thos of you who have fired both calibers, which you prefer. More generally, do you think I should stay with the 9mm that I am more used to or whether I should go with the .45 so my 1911 has a companion. Thanks for the advice! |

I have both and both are great. The .45 is one of the softest recoiling .45 ACP pistols I have and also one of the most accurate. The 9mm is like shooting a .22 for me, almost no recoil and very, very consistant. If you want the absolute knock down of the .45, go with it. If you want the capacity of the 9mm, go with it.
IMHO, the .40 is a compromise between the two and the thing about compromises is...... |

I have exactly zero guns chambered in .40. I haven't really even considered it. Is there a reason I should with this pistol? I have both the .45&.40 in the USP Compact. I like them both but having the extra fire power the .40 gives me with the power of the .40S&W. I seem to have it on me a lot more then the .45. |
| While i like .45acp a lot, i'm having problems finding it available right now. I like to shoot my carry gun once a week. 9mm is available and cheaper to practice with, so right now i would say 9mm is a better choice. But both 9mm and .45acp are good to go in the HK USP pistols. |

9mm.
In the Full Size USP, I would get the .45. 12 rounds of 45 vs 15 rounds of 9mm? Thats not enough difference to make me pick the 9. In the Compact however, its 8 vs 14, and thats a little more substantial difference. 9 is cheaper to shoot anc practice with, and a good 9mm defense load will be just as potent as a .45 load I got the .45 full size and the Compact 9mm |

My new USPc came in a couple of days ago. I went with the .45. I figured if my 1911 is down for some reason, I like the ide of having another option in that caliber. It also seems this is a relaible platform for the .45. Part of me still thinks the 9mm would be better, so maybe I'll pick one up some day. Here is the first pic. http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/728/usp.jpg Nice gun. |

They are really one of my favorite pistols! |
| Since you are still thinking about the 9mm I say pick one up. They are excellent carry pieces. Slightly smaller than the .45, more rounds, and less recoil for quicker shots. Cheaper to practice with as well. .45ACP is a great round but nowadays I just don't see any advantage of it over 9mm. |
