Anyone have this issue?  I have run a 150 or so rounds through mine and it doesn't seem to want to lock back the slide on an empty mag.  I've cleaned it, and tried a couple of different types of ammo and it still does it. I generally don't use a bunch of lube, so maybe that's an issue, but I'm not sure. I haven't changed my grip or done anything different than I do with other pistols, so I'm not sure what's up?  If anyone can shed some light on this, let me know!

Thanks,

Kibster

Weak Mag Springs?

Your grip is probably interfering with the upward movement of the slide release.  Take 25 rounds to the range.  Load one round in one mag.  Shoot the gun one handed and make sure every time that you aren't touching the slide release.  I bet it locks back every time.

This or cheap 3rd party mags.  Will the slide lock back by just racking it?

Are you resting your thumb on the slide release?

Since its new....

Top two guesses are....

1- Your thumb is resting on the slide lock
2- You're shooting low-powered ammunition like remington UMC- once your HK loosens up a bit UMC will function 100% but on occasion you run into slide lock issues.

I don't think my thumb is hitting the release but it's one of those things that until I look at it, I probably won't realize it.  I'll try it out.  I tried several types of ammo too, so I'm not sure if that's it.  I didn't lube it a ton, maybe it needs a bit more as well?

Keep it lubed up, make sure its clean, and try and shoot some federal american eagle through it.

HK on occasion does put out a turd magazine spring right off the bat...so its possible that its that.

I generally replace all my HK mag springs with wolff springs.  It sucks that you have to go ahead and swap mag springs on expensive mags, but atleast it will take care of any potential mag spring related problems in the future.

Easiest way to diagnose quickly is just loading 1 round in the magazine and testing that way.  If your thumb is off the release, your weapon is lubed, and you're shooting federal AE ammunition and it still doesn't lock back, its safe to assume its the mag springs.  My guess however is that you just need to get it broken in a bit.  There could simply be a burr somewhere that is slowing the slide down enough to the point that it will function but not lock back.  500 or so rounds should take care of any potential "break in" issue.

It could also be the dreaded HK internal lock failure.  It has been attributed to the failure of mags to drop free when the slide is locked back, but it might cause this as well.  It's caused by the gun having the internal lock engaged, and some gunshop heehaw forcing the slide back through the lock, thus bending an internal piece.  To see if this is the case, place an empty mag in the gun, retract the slide allowing it to lock, and then attempt to drop the magazine.  If it does not drop freely, an internal part is bent, which you can replace if you feel confident, otherwise, contact HK to send it in(you'll have to contact HK anyway to get the part, they'll know what it is)

I don't see how that has anything to do with the lockout feature...

I'm just going to sit and wait until he tries to shoot without interfering with the slide release.

Some guns were shipped locked, or locked after shipping.   When some counter person at a gunshop goes to show someone the gun, and first tries to clear the gun, they can't because of the lockout feature.  However, if you use enough force, you can overcome the strut, and bend some internals of the gun.  It's a documented cause of the failure of a magazine to drop free with the slide locked back, so I felt it'd be worth checking.  Considering that the gun comes with 2 mags, I highly doubt that both would have weak springs or bad followers, and it could very easily be that the OP is somehow depressing the slide lock while shooting.  I'd also try inserting an empty mag and racking the slide back rapidly a few times and see if you can get the problem to occur.  Also try releasing the slide with an empty mag inserted, I've found this difficult on many guns due to the follower tilting in the mag body.  If all else fails, send it back to H&K.

I'm aware of the lockout misunderstandings and the bent hammer strut as a result.  But I can't see how a bent hammer strut will make it harder for the slide release to get moved upwards by the follower.  I also can't see how the bent hammer strut would not allow the slide to move fully enough rearward to let the slide release engage.

They are not at all connected.  That's all I'm saying.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll take a look when I get home.  This problem is not consistent, so I'm thinking it's mag spring, or maybe ammo, or maybe just break-in.  I'll try some of these suggestions though and see what comes of it.  Beyond the slide not locking back, it's very accurate, and I love the gun!~

My full size HK45 was doing that with UMC ammo, loves everything else I have run through it - it is getting better over time though.

I am thinking something with the magazine/spring. I have used UMC, PMC, Blazer etc. etc. and have never had any ammo issues.
