So I was out at the range this morning having some fun and a little practice before tomorrow's IDPA game and was propositioned by a pretty little thing.

I've been thinking of picking up a S&W M&P in .40 and trying it alongside my USP .40.  It's a good looking gun, nice curves and responded well to my manipulations.  But I'd never fired it before, just gun store flirting.  Well while doing a little fun gong shooting an older gentleman pulled up and got setup to shoot.  He started shooting at some targets and was a little all over the place.  Once I'd run through a couple magazines and needed to reload I walked over and introduced myself.  Nice old guy, ex-Navy Commander from before I was born.  He had just bought an M&P .40 fullsize and this was the first time he had taken it to the range to shoot.  He said he was having trouble hitting the targets because he was always very nervous about the first 100-150 rounds since when he had a new 1911 (this was in about 1965 or so) a bullet had jammed in the barrel and he didn't notice and well we know what happened on the next pull of the trigger.  Luckily he wasn't hurt but he has carried this nervousness since then with new guns.  He asked me what I was shooting so I showed him and he asked if I would be nice enough to put 100 rounds through his gun if I had the time.

Well let me tell you in no time flat I was loading the three magazines he had.  It was a very nice shooting gun but even at the end of the 100 rounds (with zero problems) I couldn't get a grip that wasn't sliding around with each shot.  Hard grip, soft grip, different types of weakhand placement, nada.  I don't have this problem with my Sig or any glocks I've shot but so I was a bit perplexed.  Maybe it was because of how new it was and the plastic just needs to have the "shine" taken off it but it really disapointed me.  I let the guy shoot my H&K, which was the first time he had handled a USP and he said he liked it a lot.  I went back to finish up with some mobility and kneeling stances and it just hit me....

I LOVE MY H&K USP!

I guess sometimes you do need a bit of a wake up call to remind you of the ones you love.
