Is there a link for serial number look ups or another way to date a pistol's manufacture?

From the "HK handgun-oriented links" post at the top of the H&K forum:
www.parkcitiestactical.com/pct_faq.htm
Under the heading HK markings. it tells you how to figure out all the date codes.

Is the date code seperate from the serial number?

The serial number has no letters in it.

reading what I believe to be the serial number off the box and the barrel is eight digits long.  Then imediately to the rightthe mark 09-98.  I would assume that could be the date of manufacture.  There are many other numbers on the boxes label.  I need to know before I purchase because in my state it has to be manufactured prior to 10/98.

Thanks for the help

Not sure about the serial number. But on the left side of the slide on my USPf
there is a 2 letter code that tells the year of manufacture. Mine is a KH date code
so was manufactured in '97. Check the slide if the gun is available for you to inspect.
I didn' t realize NH had a "must be manufactured before this date...." law. Or are you
a Peoples Republic of Mass resident now like me? This state never ceases to amaze me..

Date code and serial numbers are completely different.  For a full explanation of the date codes see here.
