Ok, I have shot a buddys USP LEM for a while, and I am going to get an HK in .40s&w in a month or so. I love the USP, but I am wondering, how does it compare to the P2000? I have never shot a '2000. If you have good pics, POST EM! |

I've got a P2000 in .40 S&W It has interchangeable backstraps, ambi slide release, no manual safeties and ambi mag release. Only some USP40c holsters will work with it because of the ambi slide release getting in the way. It does use the same mags as the USP40c. It uses different sights though so be aware of that if you are looking for night sights. I like it a little better than the USP compact, but that's a personal preference. |
So, how do they compare to each other in concealed carry? Does the ambi slide release make that much difference? |
From what I could tell they are about the same size. They fit in the same holsters if the slide release on the right side doesn't hang up on the holster. So it should conceal just like a USP40c. For most leather holsters the slide release hanging up isn't a problem. Almost all of Galco's leather holsters that will carry a USPc will carry a P2000 also. Most major holster makers offer a model for the P2000 now so getting one really isn't an issue unless you are trying to find something locally, then it can be a pain. It is almost the same size as a Glock 23, it is a little bit thinner and a little bit heavier. I like the ambi slide release because I practice shooting left handed too. It's really nice to have that available. Personal preference though, it isn't totally necessary. I just like having the controls available on both sides of the weapon. |

I don't like manual safeties on my carry gun -- I don't want to be fucking with one of those when I need to save my life. I don't care how well trained you are, it leaves room for error and it slows you down. This is why I don't carry a single action. I prefer a DA or DA/SA (or LEM!) with nothing but a slide lock/release and a decocker if necessary. One of my other requirements is that the gun have a hammer. Because it doesn't have a safety I want to be able to put my thumb on the hammer while holstering. This is why I don't carry a glock. The p2000 meets my requirements perfectly. I like the USPC but I'd have to have the manual safety removed if I was going to carry it (it's bad to carry something with a safety but not use the safety.) If I wasn't going to carry the P2K I'd carry a Sig. Yes, I realize people who shoot themselves with glocks are stupid, but I still don't trust them. Case in point -- the recent fobus (I think it was fobus) glock holster fiasco, resulting in several accidental discharges due to the holster catching the trigger (and "safety" if you consider the glock safety to provide any security.) You have to figure out what your requirements are, and ideally shoot both. |
