Just started considering the above pistol for a CCW. I haven't got to handle one yet, nor am I a previous HK owner; just doing some intiial research.
What are your opinions of the above pistol? I realize that recoil is subjective, but in your opinion, does it shoot as soft as a G30? Any issues with these pistols I should be aware of? What has been your experience with HK customer service? How's HK's quality control; past and present? If I purchase used without knowing the round count, what springs/parts should be replaced immediately? Any information you could provide me would be helpful. Looking forward to joining the club. |

Just my $0.02.

……What are your opinions of the above pistol? I realize that recoil is subjective, but in your opinion, does it shoot as soft as a G30? It is ok. The shooter makes more difference than the gun. Have not shot a G30. Any issues with these pistols I should be aware of? Non-standard rail. Adapter is required for most lights. What has been your experience with HK customer service? Not very impressive. My trigger bar broke. I think it took a month to get a replacement part, though they did replace it for free. Seem to never have the parts I want. How's HK's quality control; past and present? Have heard very few complaints. If I purchase used without knowing the round count, what springs/parts should be replaced immediately? Not certain. In general, they are very durable. Very few people will every need to replace anything. Recoil spring should probably be replaced before 25k rounds. Some have gone much longer. Not certain when exactly this should be done. Tech support will not/cannot provide a number. It would probably be ammunition dependent. The whole recoil spring assembly is ~$93. This includes the rod, retaining washer, spring, and bushing. I will probably pick up a spare assembly very soon and will at some point put get a new spring and bushing on the old one for a spare. I have been unable to procure just the spring and bushing so far. HK USA indicates they do carry them, but I have been informed they were not in stock every time I called. Unless you do not mind spending the money, I would just go with something that has cheaper mags; better parts support; and a standard rail. Mag prices are ridiculous. I have ~15k rounds through mine and it is my primary carry gun. I am not a hater. |

I cannot compare it to a g30 because it has been too long since I have shot one, but I find the USPC .45 to very mild shooting compact .45 It is sure a lot milder in recoil than my extremely heavy PO P12 stainless. QC with HKs has always been excellent and there are no issues with this pistol, past or present. While many bitch about HK CS it is mostly internet parroting from decades ago when CS was not so great. I have had many dealings with HK CS over the last 10 years and have always gotten excellent service from them. On the USPC, don't replace anything. If it looks in good shape go with it. There is nothing that needs ritual replacing on the HK pistols and even HK does not recommend replacing the recoil spring until 10,00 rounds (straight from HK on their web forums). I have 12,000 on mine and it is still as good as new, feeling the same way during recoil as does its sequential stable mate that has less than 1K through it. Go to HKPRO and do some reading up. There is a lot of good information there as well in the HK-USA forums. |

What are your opinions of the above pistol? Possibly (likely?) THE most accurate production .45acp model made & sold in the US, IMO. Many people (including me) shoot it more accurately than the full sized USP. Not sure why, but we do. I realize that recoil is subjective, but in your opinion, does it shoot as soft as a G30?
Easily. I owned a Glock 30 once & can compare the two. As you mention, recoil IS subjective. Any issues with these pistols I should be aware of?
You'll end up neglecting your other pistols, IMO. What has been your experience with HK customer service?
Mine was good the only time I used them. Of course, I WAS polite when I spoke to them.
How's HK's quality control; past and present?
Much better than about anyone else, IMO. I've NEVER owned a bad H&K. If I purchase used without knowing the round count, what springs/parts should be replaced immediately?
Nothing until you shoot it. If the gun runs as needed, the mags are good. If the empty cases don't fly more than 8-10 feet, then the recoil spring is ok. With only an 8rd mag, it's not too likely it's been shot a lot, IMO. Any information you could provide me would be helpful.
Buy ammo. Lots & lots & lots of ammo............................... My .o2 |
| I can only speak to the customer service aspect. Recently my pistol fell barrel first onto the concrete from the bench at an indoor range. When I tried to put a thread protector on after to see if I screwed up my threads, it didn't go. I sent the barrel into HK on a Monday, they called me Thursday and told me everything was OK and that they were 2-day shipping it back to me on their dime. |

Sorry to hijack but I have also been looking at this model. My local has one used for $530, seems to be in good shape, go with used or go new? So far from what I've held it has a very good feel and a surprisingly light gun perfect for a long day of ccw. If it's in good shape, $530 is a great price. At my local gunshop they sell for $916.00 |

And before I got my 45C I kept hearing that they were too big and heavy for daily carry. But I dont think its really much worse than my G19 (which I think is the perfect size conceal carry gun). A little heavier for sure, but I dont notice a difference when carrying. |

Concerning my comments on the non-standard rail. I did not realize Streamlight offers a version of the TLR-3 that fits properly w/o an adapter. You can also buy the standard TLR-3 and a conversion kit. I believe the conversion kit is essentially the non-integral portion of the clamp.
Streamlight Part Numbers TLR-3 – 69220 TLR-3, USP Compact - 69221 TLR-3 USP Compact Conversion Kit – 69224 Note, the standard TLR-3 will fit the USP compacts, but fore/aft movement is arrested by clamp pressure only. When using the USP Compact version, or the standard w/ conversion kit, the non-integral portion of the clamp fills the entire groove on that side of the dust cover, preventing fore/aft movement. |
