That is a beauty. It is either a nickle plated Colt Detective Special or Cobra (It should be stamped on the other side of the barrel). The Detective Special is all steel, while the Cobra has an aluminum frame. In either variation, you got yourself  a great CCW revolver.

At one time, I had a blued Cobra and also a nickle plated Detective Special......I still kick myself for selling both of those beauties!!!!

It's either a steel framed Detective Special or a Cobra which is the same gun but with an alloy frame. In either case it is one of the nickel plated series with the shrouded ejector rod from the vintage that was made in the middle to late '70s. They are very high quality and accurate snubbies.  Either way VERY nice gift from your dad! I carried a nickel Cobra just like it for awhile and still have a brand new in the box never fired version. Take good care of it and hang on to it. Some day you can give it to your son. Old Colts  are demanding a higher price very day since Colt hasn't made those pistols for many many years..... and probably neve will again.   ENJOY!

Don't be afraid to fire that beauty. They are very durable and more accurate than you'd think, especially for a 2" barrel. Colt says the steel framed guns are OK for +P ammo, but to be on the safe side I only use standard pressure loads in  mine. They just don't make these any more and qualified gunsmiths for these old actions are very few and far between. The ONLY people I would trust inside my Colts are the factory. Enjoy it!

oh im definately gonna fire that beast tomorrow. yeah, the quality an the balance of it in your hand is amazing.

yeah, that short little 2" barrel is nice, you can hide it in many places as a home defense gun.....

Do not use +P in that gun, ever. I have had a +P rated DS go in for repairs for firing 30 +Ps through it.

yeah, the rounds i bought are not the +P. they are the standard .38 special winchester white box.

the gun is so nice i really dont want to shoot it too much. i just want to get some rounds down the barrel to see how it feels.

thanks for the advice though.
