Looking at a colt commander, model #04691.  Picture shows series 80 on the slide but in doing research, it appears to be a 1991 series, which is it?  Dont know much about colt so hopefully not a dumb question.

1991 Series 80

Although mine doesn't say 1991 anywhere on the gun.

Thanks, how then if at all does it differ from the 1991 series.  I want a series 80 but people say the 1991 series suck.

Nothing wrong with the "new" 1991's---I own 2.

The main complaint is with the older ones--1990's production---which were crudely finished---the new ones are equivelent to the older MkIV series.

ALL 1991's are series 80---which denotes the firing pin safety----as were the MkIV's.

All depends on you're looking for--1991's don't have the swoopy beavertails or huge mag wells-----they are good solid gun on their own or as the base for a custom gun.

Mine are box stock other that switching the grips between my 2 guns---with no plans on changing anything. My blued Commander has a more tactical look with the rubber grips off my stainless Gov't model-----and stainless Gov't is one good lookin piece with the rosewood grips off the blued model.
