Investigating candidates for concealed carry.  My first thought is a 1911 style gun.
Who carries (or has carried) a Colt Defender or Officer?
Where can I find one?  Nothing available locally, but then Colt has never been one for regular inventory.

I carry one of several Colts.  First thing, don't get so hung up on a short barrled 1911.  I carry a Gov. a good amount of the time but most of the time I carry either a Commander (4.25 barrel) or a CCO (4.25 barrel with officer grip) which is what I consider the perfect carry gun.  Long enough slide to give good velocity with 45 and function well, short enough grip to hide well.  With a good IWB holster and a good belt, you can carry any size 1911 with no problem.  The best thing about the 1911 is its width, or lack there of.

That prety much covers it.

The only other thing I will add is that the 1911 is generally easier for most people to shoot accurately

I might also add, if you get a light weight Commander, Para Ord... you are only talking 28 oz.  Not bad for a carry gun.

I have and occasionaly carry a stainless Colt Officers ACP. It's a fine weapon that has given me 100%.

I have considered carrying my Colt Commander but thought that might still be large.
What rigs or how do you carry your 1911 in the summer?  in the winter?

I had an Officers model that was plauged with problems.  I don't know if it was the fact that it was a Colt or the fact that it was a short barreled .45 but that gun never worked properly.  I sent it back to Colt three times with no luck, constant FTF's.  I sold it and bought a full size Kimber that has never failed me.

With a good belt, I carry my Commander and CCO in a Galco NSA II or Concealable.  I carry my GOV in a Galco SkyOps.

The belt is the key.  Get a good belt.

Colt 1991 Compact - is this similar to an officer model?

Can one put a Commander slide, with all the trimmings, on an Officers frame?

Sure, Colt did and called it the CCO
